경상북도는 18일 포항 체인지업그라운드(포스텍)에서 글로벌 헬스케어 의공학 연구소(K-BIGHEART, 국가연구소 NRL 2.0) 개소식을 개최했다고 밝혔다. 해당 연구소는 지난해 9월 과학기술정보통신부와 교육부가 공동 주관한 국가연구소 공모사업에 선정된 결과로, 경북에서는 유일하게 선정됐다.
이번 사업은 전국 4곳만 선정된 대형 국책 프로젝트로, 향후 10년간 총 1,130억 원이 투입된다. 이는 지역 연구개발(R&D) 사업 가운데 최대 규모로, 경북 바이오 연구 역량을 한 단계 끌어올릴 핵심 거점으로 기대를 모은다.
연구소는 하버드 의과대학 교수인 루크 리(Luke P. Lee) 교수를 중심으로 운영되며, 35명의 연구진이 참여해 바이오와 반도체 융합 연구를 수행한다. 특히 생체의학 통합회로(IC)를 기반으로 한 정밀의학 구현을 핵심 목표로 ▲글로벌 헬스 생체의학 IC ▲장기·오가노이드 IC ▲세포·양자 생체의학 IC 등 3대 분야 연구 허브 구축에 나선다.
또한 양자과학기술과 바이오 융합을 통해 미래 바이오산업의 새로운 성장 기반을 마련한다는 계획이다.
이날 개소식에는 과학기술정보통신부와 교육부, 한국연구재단, 포스텍 등 주요 기관 관계자들이 참석해 연구소 출범을 축하했다.
경북도는 이번 연구소를 중심으로 지·산·학·연 협력체계를 강화하고, 포항을 글로벌 헬스케어 연구 거점으로 육성한다는 방침이다.
양금희 경상북도 경제부지사는 “이번 국가연구소 개소는 정밀의학과 바이오헬스 분야에서 경북의 미래 성장동력을 확보하는 중요한 계기”라며 “포항이 세계적 수준의 연구기관과 협력하는 글로벌 연구 중심지로 도약할 수 있도록 적극 지원하겠다”고 밝혔다.

North Gyeongsang Province has officially embarked on fostering a next-generation industry that fuses bio and semiconductor technologies.
North Gyeongsang Province announced on the 18th that it held an opening ceremony for the Global Healthcare Biomedical Engineering Research Institute (K-BIGHEART, National Research Institute NRL 2.0) at the Pohang Change-Up Ground (POSTECH). The institute was selected as a result of a public competition for national research institutes jointly organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Education last September, and it was the only one selected from North Gyeongsang Province.
This project is a large-scale national initiative in which only four locations nationwide were selected, with a total of 113 billion won to be invested over the next 10 years. This is the largest scale among regional R&D projects and is expected to serve as a key hub to elevate North Gyeongsang Province's bio research capabilities to the next level.
The institute will be operated under the leadership of Professor Luke P. Lee of Harvard Medical School, with a team of 35 researchers participating to conduct research on the convergence of bio and semiconductors. In particular, with the core goal of realizing precision medicine based on biomedical integrated circuits (ICs), the institute is embarking on the establishment of research hubs in three major fields: Global Health Biomedical ICs, Organoid ICs, and Cell and Quantum Biomedical ICs.
Furthermore, the plan is to lay a new foundation for the growth of the future bio-industry through the convergence of quantum science and technology with bio.
Officials from key institutions, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Education, the National Research Foundation of Korea, and POSTECH, attended the opening ceremony to celebrate the launch of the institute.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province plans to strengthen the cooperation system among local governments, industry, academia, and research institutes centered around this institute, and to foster Pohang as a global healthcare research hub.
Yang Geum-hee, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, "The opening of this national research institute is an important opportunity to secure Gyeongbuk's future growth engines in the fields of precision medicine and biohealth," adding, "We will provide active support to help Pohang leap forward as a global research center collaborating with world-class research institutions."
