경주시는 18일 열린 제296회 임시회 제2차 본회의에서 ‘경주시 어린이·청소년 대중교통비 지원에 관한 조례안’이 원안 가결됐다고 밝혔다.
이번 조례에 따라 만 6세 이상 18세 이하 어린이·청소년은 교통카드를 이용할 경우 경주 시내버스를 무료로 이용할 수 있다. 별도의 전용 카드 발급 없이 기존 어린이·청소년 교통카드를 그대로 사용하면 요금이 전액 지원된다.
교통카드는 편의점 등에서 구매 후 생년월일을 등록해 사용할 수 있으며, 현금으로 승차할 경우에는 기존 요금(어린이 800원, 청소년 1,200원)이 적용된다.
이번 정책은 어린이·청소년의 이동권 보장과 학부모 교통비 부담 완화를 위해 추진됐다. 시는 대중교통 이용 활성화와 함께 교육·문화 접근성 향상에도 기여할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
경주시에 따르면 지난해 시내버스 이용 실적은 어린이 18만 2,959건, 청소년 163만 2,298건으로 집계됐다. 같은 해 말 기준 경주지역 어린이·청소년 인구는 2만 2,664명이다.
최혁준 경주시장 권한대행은 “이번 정책은 어린이와 청소년의 이동권을 실질적으로 보장하고 학부모의 부담을 덜기 위한 것”이라며 “시행 초기 혼선이 없도록 철저히 준비해 안정적으로 정착시키겠다”고 말했다.
이동협 경주시의회 의장은 “시민이 체감할 수 있는 교통복지 실현의 계기가 되길 바란다”며 “특히 교통 접근성이 낮은 지역 학생들도 혜택을 받을 수 있도록 보완이 필요하다”고 강조했다.
