[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시가 19일 오후 벡스코 컨벤션홀과 야외 광장에서 ‘2026 부산 세계 물의 날 기념행사’를 열고 낙동강 수질 개선과 취수원 다변화의 중요성을 강조했다.
‘세계 물의 날’은 깨끗한 물의 가치를 되새기고 전 세계의 물 문제 해결을 위한 협력을 촉진하기 위해 1992년 유엔이 지정한 기념일로, 매년 3월 22일 기념된다. 부산시는 이번 행사를 통해 기후 위기 시대에 대응하는 지속 가능한 물관리 정책 방향을 모색했다.
행사에는 성희엽 부산시 미래혁신부시장, 김좌관 대통령직속 국가물관리위원회 위원장, 최소남 먹는물부산시민네트워크 대표, 기후에너지환경부 물환경정책관, 대구시 맑은물하이웨이추진단장 등 관계자와 시민 300여 명이 참석했다.
1부 기념식에서는 성 부시장과 시민들이 함께 ‘맑은 물 염원 시민 퍼포먼스’를 진행했다. 참가자들은 가로 12미터, 세로 10미터의 대형 현수막을 펼쳐 깨끗한 물 확보 의지를 표현하며 취수원 다변화와 낙동강 수질 개선의 필요성을 알렸다.

2부 토론회에서는 ‘낙동강 수질 개선과 취수원 다변화 방안’을 주제로 전문가 발표와 토론이 열렸다. 기후에너지환경부가 낙동강 수질 개선 방안을 설명했으며, 세종대학교 맹승규 교수가 취수원 다변화 추진 방안을 제시했다. 단국대학교 독고석 교수가 좌장을 맡아 부산의 안정적인 취수원 확보와 낙동강 수질 개선을 위한 심층 토론이 이어졌다.
부산시는 시민이 안심하고 마실 수 있는 물 공급 체계 구축을 위해 국회와 정부, 유역 지자체와의 협력을 강화할 계획이다. 또한 공업용수 공급 혁신과 물 재이용 확대 등 물 정책 전반의 혁신을 추진하기로 했다.
성 부시장은 “정수 가능한 물이 아니라 처음부터 깨끗한 물을 공급받는 것이 시민이 요구하는 최소 기준”이라며 “낙동강 수질의 근본적 개선 없이는 부산의 물 문제를 해결할 수 없다”고 말했다. 이어 “취수원 다변화와 낙동강 수질 개선은 국가 물안보 차원의 과제인 만큼 정부의 강력한 물관리 정책과 제도적 지원이 필요하다”며 “부산시는 맑은 물 확보를 위해 정부와 시민이 함께 행동하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Busan City hosted the 2026 World Water Day celebration at BEXCO on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of improving water quality in the Nakdong River and diversifying the city’s water sources.
World Water Day, designated by the United Nations in 1992, is observed every March 22 to raise awareness of the importance of clean water and to promote global cooperation on water issues. This year’s event in Busan focused on sustainable water management policies in the era of climate crisis.
More than 300 participants attended, including Deputy Mayor Seong Hee-yeop, Kim Jwa-kwan, chair of the Presidential Water Management Committee, Choi So-nam, head of the Busan Citizens’ Drinking Water Network, and local experts and civic groups.
The event featured two sessions — a commemorative ceremony and a discussion forum. During the first session, citizens joined a “Clean Water Pledge” performance, unfurling a massive 12-by-10-meter banner at BEXCO’s outdoor plaza to express their hopes for cleaner water and to promote the need for diversified water sources and Nakdong River restoration.
The second session focused on policy discussions. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment presented measures for improving water quality in the Nakdong River, while Professor Maeng Seung-kyu of Sejong University outlined plans for diversifying water intake sources. The discussion, chaired by Professor Dok Ko-seok of Dankook University, examined long-term strategies for ensuring stable water supply and cleaner river ecosystems.
Busan City announced plans to strengthen cooperation with the national government, the National Assembly, and regional authorities while advancing innovative water policies, including expanding industrial water recycling and reuse.
Deputy Mayor Seong said that citizens “deserve to receive water that is clean from the source, not just purified afterward,” stressing that “solving Busan’s water issues requires fundamental improvement of the Nakdong River.” He added that improving water quality and diversifying water sources are “not only Busan’s tasks but national water security priorities,” calling for strong government action and civic participation to secure safe and clean water.
