군에 따르면 지역 내 콩 재배면적은 829ha로 충북 도내 2위 규모를 기록하고 있다.
특히 단양콩은 산지 거래가격 기준 타 시·군보다 약 10% 높은 수준을 유지하고 있어, 주요 콩 산지와 비교해도 경쟁력이 두드러지는 것으로 나타났다.
이 같은 경쟁력의 배경에는 단양 특유의 석회암 지대 토양이 있다.
단양 지역은 석회암 성분이 많은 토양 특성으로 인해 콩의 세포 조직이 치밀하게 형성되는 것으로 알려져 있다.
이로 인해 두부 가공 시 단백질 응고 속도가 빠르고 고형분 함량이 높아 일반 콩보다 가공 수율이 약 15∼20% 높은 것으로 분석되고 있다.
