경주시는 25일 오후 한국수력원자력에 SMR 1호기 유치 공모 신청서를 제출했다고 밝혔다.
이날 신청서 전달은 최혁준 경주시장 권한대행과 이동협 경주시의회 의장, 김남용 경주유치단장, 동경주 주민대표 등이 직접 한수원을 방문해 진행됐다.
이번 공모는 정부와 한수원이 공동으로 추진하는 혁신형 소형모듈원자로(i-SMR) 기술 개발 및 실증 사업의 일환으로, 차세대 원전 기술 확보와 상용화를 목표로 하고 있다.
경주시는 SMR 국가산업단지와 문무대왕과학연구소를 기반으로 연구·실증·제조·운영에 이르는 전주기 산업 생태계 구축이 가능하다는 점을 강점으로 내세우고 있다.
특히 시는 공모 신청에 앞서 지난 13일 시민설명회를 열고 SMR 1호기의 안전성과 경제적 파급효과를 공유하며 지역 의견을 수렴했다. 이 같은 과정을 통해 확보한 주민 수용성을 신청서에 반영, 타 지자체 대비 경쟁력을 갖췄다는 설명이다.
경주시는 이번 SMR 1호기 유치를 통해 에너지 산업 클러스터를 조성하고 지역경제 활성화를 도모하는 동시에, 경주를 SMR 산업의 거점 도시로 육성한다는 구상이다.
최혁준 경주시장 권한대행은 “SMR 1호기 유치는 경주의 미래를 좌우할 핵심 사업”이라며 “모든 행정 역량을 집중해 반드시 유치할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

Gyeongju City has officially entered the race to host the first Small Modular Reactor (SMR).
Gyeongju City announced on the afternoon of the 25th that it had submitted an application to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) to host the SMR Unit 1.

This bid is part of the Innovative Small Modular Reactor (i-SMR) technology development and demonstration project jointly promoted by the government and KHNP, aiming to secure and commercialize next-generation nuclear power technology.
Gyeongju City is highlighting its strength in the ability to establish a full-cycle industrial ecosystem encompassing research, demonstration, manufacturing, and operation, based on the SMR National Industrial Complex and the King Munmu Science Research Institute. In particular, prior to submitting the application, the city held a public briefing on the 13th to share the safety and economic impact of the first SMR and to gather local opinions. The city explained that it has secured a competitive edge over other local governments by reflecting the public acceptance obtained through this process in its application.
Gyeongju City plans to establish an energy industry cluster and revitalize the local economy through the attraction of the first SMR, while simultaneously fostering Gyeongju as a hub city for the SMR industry.
Choi Hyeok-jun, Acting Mayor of Gyeongju, stated, "Attracting the first SMR is a key project that will determine the future of Gyeongju," adding, "We will concentrate all administrative capabilities and do our utmost to ensure that we successfully secure the project."
