경기도교육청-시애틀 한국교육원, ‘K-에듀’로 손잡다

경기도교육청(교육감 임태희)이 미국 시애틀 한국교육원과 연계해 ‘경기한국어랭귀지스쿨(KLS)’ 3섹터 기반의 한국어 교육 지원과 전통문화 교류 사업을 본격적으로 가동한다.

이번 사업은 임태희 교육감이 지난해 2월 미국 방문 당시 체결한 업무협약을 바탕으로, 약 1년간의 콘텐츠 개발과 플랫폼 구축 과정을 거쳐 해외 현장 적용에 성공한 사례다. 도교육청은 지난 3월 워싱턴주 공립학교 학생 및 재외동포들을 대상으로 총 500개의 접속 계정을 발급하며 공교육 기반의 지원 모델을 구축했다.

이번에 선보인 ‘KLS 3섹터’ 시스템은 전 세계 어디서나 접속 가능한 온라인 플랫폼이다. 단순한 강의 시청을 넘어 ‘사전평가-학습-사후평가-이수’로 이어지는 체계적인 교육 과정을 갖췄다. 특히 원어민을 활용한 6개 국어 강의, 쇼츠(Shorts) 영상을 활용한 반복 학습, 학교 공간 탐험을 접목한 게임형 학습 자료 등을 도입해 해외 청소년들의 흥미와 몰입도를 극대화했다.

학습자들은 이 플랫폼을 통해 학교생활에 필요한 필수 한국어 표현을 자연스럽게 익히는 것은 물론, K-푸드와 K-뷰티, 전통 도예 등 다채로운 한국 문화를 시공간의 제약 없이 체험할 수 있다.

도교육청은 이번 시애틀 지원을 시작으로 뉴질랜드, 일본 사이타마 등 해외 한국교육원과의 연계를 강화해 나갈 방침이다. 단순한 일회성 지원이 아니라, 해외 공교육 현장에서 상시 학습이 가능한 지속 가능한 한국어 교육 모델을 전 세계로 확산시키겠다는 구상이다.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Tae-hee) is launching full-scale support for Korean language education and traditional culture exchange projects based on the ‘Gyeonggi Korean Language School (KLS)’ 3-sector model, in conjunction with the Seattle Korean Education Center.

Based on a memorandum of understanding signed by Superintendent Lim Tae-hee during his visit to the United States last February, this project marks a successful example of overseas field application following approximately one year of content development and platform construction. Last March, the Provincial Office of Education established a support model based on public education by issuing a total of 500 access accounts to public school students in Washington State and overseas Koreans.

The newly introduced ‘KLS 3-Sector’ system is an online platform accessible from anywhere in the world. Going beyond simple lecture viewing, it features a systematic educational curriculum that follows a progression of ‘pre-assessment, learning, post-assessment, and completion.’ In particular, the platform maximized the interest and engagement of overseas youth by introducing lectures in six languages ​​delivered by native speakers, repetitive learning using short videos, and game-based learning materials that incorporate school space exploration.

Through this platform, learners can not only naturally acquire essential Korean expressions necessary for school life but also experience diverse aspects of Korean culture—such as K-Food, K-Beauty, and traditional pottery—without spatial or temporal constraints.

Starting with this support in Seattle, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans to strengthen ties with overseas Korean education centers in locations such as New Zealand and Saitama, Japan. The vision is to spread a sustainable Korean language education model globally that enables continuous learning within overseas public education settings, rather than providing mere one-time support.

Superintendent Lim Tae-hee stated, "This project marks an important starting point for Gyeonggi Province's excellent educational content to reach the world," adding, "We will expand support for Korean language education for overseas Koreans and prospective entrants, and elevate the status of Gyeonggi-style educational autonomy through international exchange."
