[브레이크뉴스 경기북부=김완영 기자] 경기도 '의정부시, 양주시, 동두천시 통합 범시민연대 발기인대회'가 오는 4일(토) 오전 10시 30분 경기섬유지원센터 컨벤션홀에서 개최된다.
이날 행사 주최는 의양동 통합 범시민연대 추진위원회가 개최하고, (사)포럼케이비전과 희망양주의 후원으로 이루어질 계획이다.
의양동 통합은 과거 양주군의 행정구역에서 1963년 의정부시 분리, 1981년 동두천시 분리, 2003년 양주시 승격으로 현재 3개 시 체제가 되었으나, 지난 2009년을 시작으로 3차례에 걸쳐 무산된 바 있다.
추진위의 한 관계자는 "한 뿌리인 양주시를 중심으로 100만 명의 특례시를 만들어 행정적, 재정적인 기반 구축은 물론 경기북부의 중심도시로서 교통편리, 부동산 가치상승, 시민 삶의 질 개선 등이 좋아진다"라고 전했다.
최근 논의되는 '메가시티(Megacity)' 구상은 단순히 인구가 많은 도시를 넘어 핵심 거점도시를 중심으로 주변의 지역을 하나의 생활권과 경제권으로 묶어 경쟁력을 높히는 광역단위의 지방행정체제를 의미한다.
