경주시는 1일 알천홀에서 언론인을 대상으로 ‘i-SMR 유치와 지역 발전을 위한 언론인 간담회’를 개최하고, 기술적 안전성과 경제적 파급효과를 공유했다.
이날 간담회에는 최혁준 경주시장 권한대행을 비롯해 이동수 경제산업국장, 김긍구 한국전력 국제원자력대학원대학교 교수 등이 참석해 i-SMR의 필요성과 지역 유치 전략을 설명했다.
먼저 김긍구 교수는 i-SMR의 기술적 특성과 안전성을 중심으로 발표를 진행했다. 김 교수는 “i-SMR은 기존 대형 원전에 비해 안전성이 크게 향상됐고, 건설과 운영의 유연성도 확보한 차세대 에너지원”이라며 “탄소중립 시대에 대응할 핵심 기술로 평가받고 있다”고 강조했다.
이어 이동수 경제산업국장은 경주시의 유치 추진 현황과 전략을 설명하며 산업적 기대 효과를 제시했다. 그는 “경주는 원전 관련 연구·실증·산업 인프라가 집적된 지역으로 i-SMR 실증과 산업화를 동시에 추진할 수 있는 최적지”라며 “SMR 경쟁의 골든타임을 선점할 수 있는 충분한 여건을 갖추고 있다”고 밝혔다.
