지난 1일 본지 창간 18주년을 맞아 창간기념 행사가 강득구 국회의원, 최대호 안양시장을 비롯한 내외빈 100여 명의 축하객이 몰린 가운데 마벨리에 평촌점에서 열렸다.
전날 내린 촉촉한 봄비에 깨어난 듯 개화하기 시작한 벚꽃이 환하게 봄 저녁을 밝히는 가운데, 안양 군포 의왕 과천 지역에서 탄탄한 위상을 다져온 지역 언론으로서 창간일을 자축하고 감사의 마음을 전하는 자리가 열렸다.

기념식의 첫 무대는 아름다운 선율과 함께 열렸다. 1부 공연에서는 안양시립합창단이 들려주는 ‘그리운 금강산’ 등 세 곡의 깊은 울림으로 시작해, 테너 허양 교수의 열정적인 ‘그라나다’, ‘오쏠레미오’가 이어지며 관객의 열띤 호응과 함께 축제 분위기를 한껏 고조시켰다. 클래식의 우아함과 지역 언론의 자부심이 어우러진 품격 있는 시작이었다.
이어진 2부 행사에서 이여춘 발행인은 18년 전 첫 호를 세상에 내놓던 날의 초심을 떠올리며 진심 어린 소회를 전했다. 특히 올해는 “따뜻하고 다정한 지역사회를 만들어가는 신문”이 되겠다는 새로운 비전을 선포하며, “첫 호를 발간하던 때의 설레임과 진정성으로 가득찼던 초심을 잊지 않겠다”고 다짐을 하여 큰 박수를 받았다.
본지 조성현 부사장은 이어진 기념사에서 “굳건한 지역지로서 키워온 <주간현대신문·경기브레이크뉴스>에게 아낌없는 지원이 절실하게 필요한 때”라며 더욱 힘을 모아달라고 호소했다.

축사에 나선 최대호 안양시장은 임기 내내 본지와 함께 걸어온 시장답게 각별한 애정을 드러냈다. 최 시장은 “지역 신문이 겪는 어려움을 누구보다 잘 알고 있다”며 노고를 격려한 뒤, “안양시와 함께 성장하며 시민들에게 희망을 주는 언론이 되어 달라”는 기대를 표했다.
한편 만안구가 지역구인 강득구 의원은 “지역 신문이 처한 어려움을 잘 이해하고 있다”고 전제한 뒤, “어려운 때일수록 무엇보다 사실을 있는 그대로 쓰는 언론으로서의 정도와 품격을 지키는 것이 중요하다”고 강조했다.
이 밖에도 바쁜 일정으로 자리에 함께하지 못했지만 지역 국회의원들과 각 지자체장, 경기도 교육감 등이 보내온 서면 축사가 답지하여 창간 18주년의 의미를 더했다.

이날 행사의 주인공은 단연 끈끈한 의리로 뭉친 자문위원들이었다. 남상덕 엔에스홀딩스 대표(본지 자문위원장)을 비롯한 10여 명의 자문위원단은 연단 맨 앞자리에서 시종일관 뜨거운 박수와 환호를 보내며 든든한 에너지를 불어넣었다. 남상덕 위원장은 “지역 언론이 처한 환경이 예전 같지 않지만, 18년을 이어온 집요한 끈기와 저력에 아낌없는 박수를 보낸다”며 응원의 메시지를 더했다.
이날 행사에 참여한 주요 인사들은 입을 모아 지난 18년 동안 쌓아온 탄탄한 내공이 있기에, 지금의 어려운 경제 상황과 혼돈의 시대 속에서도 <주간현대신문&경기브레이크뉴스>는 더욱 환한 빛을 발할 것이라는 찬사를 남겼다.
앞으로 ‘살맛나는 지역’을 만들겠다는 <주간현대신문&경기브레이크뉴스>의 행보가 앞으로의 18년을 더욱 기대하게 만든 밤이었다.

On the 1st, a commemorative event marking the 18th anniversary of our publication was held at Mabelle Hall in Pyeongchon, attended by over 100 guests, including National Assembly member Kang Deuk-gu and Anyang Mayor Choi Dae-ho.
As cherry blossoms, which had begun to bloom as if awakened by the previous day's gentle spring rain, brightly illuminated the spring evening, the event took place to celebrate the founding anniversary and express gratitude as a local media outlet that has solidified its standing in the Anyang, Gunpo, Uiwang, and Gwacheon regions.
The ceremony opened with a beautiful melody. The first part of the performance began with the deep resonance of three songs, including "Missing Geumgangsan," performed by the Anyang City Choir. This was followed by the passionate renditions of "Granada" and "O Sole Mio" by Tenor Professor Heo Yang, which heightened the festive atmosphere amidst enthusiastic responses from the audience. It was a dignified start that blended the elegance of classical music with the pride of local media.
In the subsequent second part of the event, Publisher Lee Yeo-chun shared heartfelt reflections, recalling the original mindset from the day the first issue was released 18 years ago. In particular, he received thunderous applause for declaring a new vision for this year to become "a newspaper that builds a warm and friendly local community," and for pledging, "I will never forget the initial mindset filled with excitement and sincerity from when we published the first issue."
Anyang Mayor Choi Dae-ho, who delivered a congratulatory speech, displayed a special affection befitting a mayor who has walked alongside this newspaper throughout his term.
