포스코사이언스펠로십은 국내 대학 및 연구소에서 기초·응용과학을 연구하는 신진 교원을 선발해 안정적인 연구 환경을 제공하고, 세계적 수준의 과학자로 성장할 수 있도록 지원하는 프로그램이다. 현재까지 총 543명의 펠로우를 배출하며 국내 대표 연구자 지원 사업으로 자리 잡았다.
이번 18기 모집은 ▲수학 ▲물리학 ▲화학 ▲생명과학 등 기초과학 4개 분야와 ▲금속·신소재 ▲에너지소재 ▲환경 등 응용과학 3개 분야를 포함해 총 7개 분야에서 진행된다.
특히 새롭게 추가된 환경 분야는 탄소중립 실현과 기후위기 대응을 목표로 대기·수질·토양·폐기물 등 환경 전반은 물론 지구환경 변화까지 아우르는 통합적 연구를 폭넓게 지원한다.
지원 대상은 임용 36개월 이내(2023년 3월 1일 이후 임용) 국내 대학 및 대학 부설 연구소 소속 전임 교원이며, 선발된 연구자에게는 2년간 총 1억 원의 연구비가 지원된다.
접수 기간은 2026년 3월 20일부터 5월 31일까지 약 두 달간 진행되며, 서면심사와 추천서 평가, 발표심사를 거쳐 9월 최종 합격자가 발표될 예정이다. 최종 선발자는 10월 증서수여식 이후 본격적인 연구 활동에 들어간다.
포스코청암재단 관계자는 “포스코사이언스펠로십은 기초과학부터 응용과학까지 폭넓은 분야를 지원해 신진 연구자들이 연구에 전념할 수 있는 기반을 마련하는 데 목적이 있다”며 “특히 환경 분야 신설을 통해 기후변화, 자원순환, 오염 저감 등 복합적 환경 문제 해결을 위한 융합 연구를 적극 지원할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.

The POSCO Cheongam Foundation has launched recruitment for the 18th cohort of the ‘POSCO Science Fellowship,’ designed to foster emerging scientists in Korea. A key feature of this year is the newly established environmental field, which expands the scope of support to include research on climate change response and sustainability.
The POSCO Science Fellowship is a program that selects emerging faculty members conducting basic and applied science research at domestic universities and research institutes, provides them with a stable research environment, and supports their growth into world-class scientists. Having produced a total of 543 fellows to date, it has established itself as a leading researcher support program in Korea.
Recruitment for the 18th cohort is being conducted across a total of seven fields, including four basic science fields—Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences—and three applied science fields—Metallurgy & New Materials, Energy Materials, and Environment. In particular, the newly added environmental field broadly supports integrated research aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and responding to the climate crisis, encompassing not only the overall environment—including air, water quality, soil, and waste—but also global environmental changes.
Eligibility applies to full-time faculty members affiliated with domestic universities or university-affiliated research institutes who have been appointed within the last 36 months (appointed after March 1, 2023). Selected researchers will receive a total of 100 million KRW in research funding over two years.
The application period runs for approximately two months, from March 20 to May 31, 2026. Final successful candidates are scheduled to be announced in September following a written review, evaluation of recommendation letters, and a presentation review. The final selected candidates will begin full-scale research activities after a certificate awarding ceremony in October.
An official from the POSCO Cheongam Foundation stated, “The POSCO Science Fellowship aims to provide a foundation for emerging researchers to dedicate themselves to their work by supporting a wide range of fields, from basic science to applied science.” The official added, “In particular, through the establishment of the environmental field, we plan to actively support convergence research aimed at solving complex environmental problems such as climate change, resource recycling, and pollution reduction.”
