[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 고성군은 마동호습지에서 멸종위기 야생생물 Ⅰ급인 저어새가 관찰되는 등 주요 보호종이 잇따라 확인되고 있다고 밝혔다.
마동호습지는 해수와 담수가 만나는 기수역 생태계를 기반으로 739종의 다양한 생물이 서식하는 습지다. 국가습지보호지역으로 지정된 이후 체계적인 보전과 관리가 이뤄지고 있다.
최근에는 재두루미, 붉은배새매, 흰꼬리수리, 노랑부리저어새, 큰고니, 물수리 등 주요 보호종도 지속적으로 관찰되고 있다.
특히 전 세계 개체 수가 2천400여 마리에 불과한 멸종위기 야생생물 Ⅰ급 저어새 7개체가 지난 18일 관찰되면서, 마동호습지가 생태적으로 우수한 서식환경을 갖춘 철새 서식지이자 국제적으로도 중요한 기착지임을 보여주고 있다.
고성군은 국가습지보호지역의 체계적인 관리를 위해 생태계서비스지불제 운영, 갈대 정비 등 서식환경 개선과 먹이 주기 활동을 지속적으로 추진하고 있다.
군 관계자는 “마동호습지는 멸종위기종이 선택하는 서식지라는 점에서 가치가 크다”며“국가습지보호지역에 걸맞은 보전과 관리를 지속해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편 마동호습지는 철새 이동 경로의 핵심 거점이자 생물다양성 보전의 중심지로, 앞으로 생태 보전은 물론 교육·관광 자원으로서의 활용도 더욱 확대될 것으로 기대된다.
