브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 최성 전 고양시장이 지난 2018년 지방선거 더불어민주당 경기 고양시장 후보 경선을 두고 일부 후보들 간 대가를 약속한 각서를 작성하는 등 부정이 있었다는 의혹과 관련, 검찰로부터 무혐의를 통보받았다고 11일 밝혔다.
최 전 시장은 이날 자신의 유튜브를 통해 해당 의혹을 수사해 온 의정부지검 고양지청으로부터 무혐의 처분(공직선거법)을 받았다며 관련 내용이 담긴 검찰 통지서 등을 공개했다.
최 전 시장은 "당시 경선 당시 제 대리인과 경쟁 후보가 작성했다는 이행각서는 검찰 수사 결과 위조된 서류로 확인됐다"면서 "복수의 핵심 인사로부터 수집한 증거자료에 따르더라도 저는 위조된 이행각서와 관련한 사실이 전혀 없다고 검찰은 결론내렸다"고 설명했다.
이어 그는 "청와대와, 국회, 그리고 재선 고양시장을 하는 20년 가까운 공직생활 동안 단 한 건의 사소한 법적 위반도 없을 만큼 청렴성을 정치생명보다 더 소중히 해온 입장에서 너무나 당연한 결정"이라고 말했다.
최 전 시장은 특히 그간 받아온 지속적인 명예훼손과 악의적 허위사실 유포와 관련해서도 강력한 법정 대응을 예고했다.
그는 "지난 총선의 공천 심사가 한창 진행되던 중에 위 위조각서가 마치 사실인양 무차별적인 허위주장의 근거로 이용됐고 그로 인해 제가 공천에서 심대한 피해를 본 것은 묵과할 수 없는 범죄행위"라며 "향후 검찰과 사법부의 최종 재판결과를 지켜본 이후 추가적인 입장을 밝히겠다. 이제 공인이 아닌 자연인이기 때문에 변호사를 통해 재판 결과를 지켜보며 강력한 법적 대응을 해 나가겠다"고 입장을 밝혔다.
한편 지난 1월,당시 자유한국당(현 국민의힘)은 이재준 고양시장과 최성 전 시장의 지방선거 부정 선거 의혹이 담긴 고발장을 대검찰청에 접수했다. 고발장에는 2018년 지방선거에서 더불어민주당 고양시장 예비후보로 나선 이재준 후보가 최종 후보로 나서기 위해 같은 당 후보였던 최성 전 시장 측 인사들의 자리 보장 등 구체적인 대가를 약속하고 도움 등을 받았다는 내용이 담겼다. 이에 의정부지검 고양지청은 해당 사건을 넘겨받아 고발인 조사를 벌이는 등 수사를 벌였고, 최종 무혐의 처분을 내렸다.
