"Freedom is not free(대가 없는 자유는 없다)"
미국 워싱턴의 한국전 참전용사기념비에 새겨져 있는 글귀다. 6월 호국보훈의 달을 맞아 6·25전쟁이라는 비극이 쥐어준 우리의 자유와 번영을 감사하고, 그들의 고귀한 희생과 헌신을 되새겨 볼 필요가 있다. 이미 사회 각계각층에서 이 절대 잊을 수 없는 과거의 역사를 떠올리며 보다 나은 미래를 약속하고 있다.

지난달 21일 문재인 대통령은 미국 워싱턴DC에서 한미정상회담 후 추모의 벽 착공식에 참석한 바 있다. 기억의 못 둘레에 세워지는 추모의 벽에는 6·25전쟁에서 숨진 미군 참전용사 4만 3769명의 이름이 새겨진다. 문 대통령은 이날 착공식에서 전쟁을 함께 치렀던 한국과 미국의 동맹관계를 강조하고, 참전용사와 유가족에게 추모와 감사의 마음을 전했다.

문화계에서도 시간이 흐르면서 희미해져가는 우리의 역사와 참전용사들에 대한 고마움을 기록하고 후세에 전하고자 노력하고 있다. 사진작가 라미 현은 세계를 돌며 한국전쟁에 참전한 용사들의 모습과 사연들을 기록해왔다. 지금까지 1천400여 명의 참전용사들을 만나 사진을 찍어 액자로 제작해 선물했다. 라미 현 작가의 사진들은 2017년부터 진행해온 ‘프로젝트 솔져’ 사진 전시회를 통해 확인할 수 있다.

서울 용산구에 위치한 전쟁기념관 평화의광장에는 국군유엔 참전 용사들의 희생과 헌신을 기리는 23개의 추모탑이 있다. 추모탑에는 국가명, 월계관, 부대마크, 참전용사에게 바치는 글 등이 새겨져 있다. 추모탑은 2015년 유엔 창설 70주년을 맞아 부영그룹에서 기증했다. 이중근 부영그룹 회장은 이외에도 '6·25전쟁 1129일'을 집필해 1000만부 이상을 학교·전쟁기념관·공공기관 등에 기증한 바 있다.

추모탑에 새겨진 문구를 되새겨본다. “유엔의 깃발 아래 자유와 평화를 위해 싸운 유엔참전국 용사들의 위업과 숭고한 희생을 영원히 기억하고자 합니다. 참전용사들이 희생됐던 그 날은 영원히 잊혀지지 말길… 역사를 잊은 민족에게 미래는 없다.”

The inscription is inscribed on the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It is necessary to appreciate our freedom and prosperity that the tragedy of the Korean War has given us on the occasion of the month of Patriots and Veterans Affairs in June, and reflect on their noble sacrifices and dedication. Already, all walks of life are promising a better future, recalling this unforgettable past history.
Last month, 21, Moon Jae-in president attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the wall of memory after the Korea-U.S. summit meeting in Washington dc it. The memorial wall, which is built around the nail of memory, will bear the names of 43,769 U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War. At the groundbreaking ceremony, President Moon emphasized the alliance between South Korea and the United States, which fought the war together, and expressed his condolences and gratitude to veterans and bereaved families.
The cultural community is also trying to record and convey its gratitude to the future for our history and veterans, which are fading over time. Photographer Rami-hyun has traveled around the world to record images and stories of warriors who fought in the Korean War. So far, he has met more than 1,400 veterans and photographed them, framed them and presented them as gifts. Photographs of Ra Mi-hyun can be found through the "Project Soldier" photo exhibition, which has been underway since 2017.
There are 23 memorial towers in Peace Square at the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul, honoring the sacrifices and dedication of U.N. veterans. The memorial tower is engraved with the name of the country, laurel wreath, auxiliary mark, and writings dedicated to veterans. The memorial tower was donated by Booyoung Group in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Lee Joong-geun, chairman of Booyoung Group, also wrote "The 1129 Days of the Korean War" and donated more than 10 million copies to schools, war memorials, and public institutions.
Recalling the inscription on the memorial tower. "I want to remember forever the exploits and sublime sacrifices of UN war veterans who fought for freedom and peace under the banner of the UN. May the day when veterans were sacrificed never be forgotten... There is no future for a nation that has forgotten its history."
