송영길 대표는 25일 오전 국회에서 열린 최고위원회의에서 "현행 당헌에 규정된 원칙에 따라 제20대 대선 경선을 진행하기로 결정했다"며 "180일 전 후보 선출 규정을 기준으로 대선경선기획단이 수립한 기본적인 경선일정을 보고받았다"고 밝혔다.
송영길 대표는 이어 "내년 3월 9일 대선에서 우리 민주당이 국민의 신임을 받는데 어떤 방법이 적절할지 충정어린 진지한 논의들이 있었다"면서 "여러 의견이 있었지만 우리 지도부는 하나로 가야한다는 합의 하에 이견이 있는 최고위원에게 양해를 구하고 같이 힘을 하나로 모아 결정했다"고 설명했다.
