외길을 간다는 것. 한 우물을 판다는 것. 결코, 결고...쉬운 일이 아니다. 필자는 지난 9월16일 한국정권 가꾸기 외길을 걸어온 박태후(朴太侯) 화가(1955년 생)를 만나러 먼 길을 갔었다. 박태후 화가(이하 박태후로 기명함)는 나주 호남원예고등학교를 졸업했다. 그는 전남 나주시 금천면 촌곡2구에 주소를 둔 죽설헌(竹雪軒)의 주인(대표)이다. 이 마을이 그의 고향이었다. 박태후는 고등학교를 다니면서부터 이 곳에 정원을 가꾸기 시작했다. 그러하니 박태후의 개인정원 가꾸기는 올해까지 50년째. 코스타리카 지역에 많이 살고 있는 ‘나무늘보’라는 야생동물은 늘상 나무에 매달려 있다. 박태후는 ‘나무늘보’처럼 지난 50년간을 한민족의 전통정원인 한국형 정원 가꾸기에 매달렸었다. ‘나무늘보’처럼 50년을. 죽설헌이란 정원은 한국형 정원이 어떤 정원인지를 알게 하는 아이디어가 숨겨진 정원이다. 이 르포기사를 몇 회로 나눠 게재하려 한다. 왜? 이 글을 읽는 독자들에게 한국형 정원은 아이디어를 제공하려 함이다.(필자 주)

“자연스러움”...그 자체가 한국형 정원의 핵심
박태후가 50년째 가꿔온 정원의 규모는 13,000평쯤 된다. 그는 “50년 정원을 가꾸다보니 정원이 무언지가 좀 보인다”고 말했다.
“현재 한국에 만들어진 정원을 들여다보면, 일본식+서양식이 90%쯤 된다고 본다. 일본식 정원은 축소형(縮小型)이고, 서양식 정원은 정복식(征服式)이라고 설명하고 싶다. 한국식이란, 어떤 정원이라고 말해야 할까? 정원에 손을 대지 않았다면? 한국식으로 한 발짝 다가갔다고 말할 수 있다. 나의 정원은 순수한 한국식을 지향해왔다. 자연스러운 정원이다. 자연스러움을 중요시 한다.”
박태후는 그간 한국형 정원을 지향해왔다. 그런데 그가 반세기에 걸쳐 지향해온 한국형 정원 가꾸기란 무엇을 의미하는 것일까? 박태후는 “자연스러움”, 그 자체를 한국형 정원의 핵심으로 삼고 있다. 그가 꾸민 죽설헌에는 기존에 있었던 소나무 몇 그루를 제외하고는 그가 스스로 식재하거나 씨를 뿌려 키웠다고 한다.

죽설헌 내부의 ‘왕버들 숲’은 원래 논이었던 곳을 파서 만든 연못과 어울린다. 이곳을 본 소감을? 어떻게 설명해야 할까? 그 어디에도 없는 아름다운 숲길이다. 나무에 원래부터 자라나서 달린, 가지 하나를 베지 않고, 있는 대로를 살렸다. 이게 바로 ‘한국형 정원’이라고 말한다고 할 수 있다.
박태후는 기존의 정원 전문가들에게 비판의 화살을 날린다. 일본식 또는 미국식 정원만을 만들어왔다는 것을 비판하는 것이다.
“한국 내 많은 정원들을 만들어온 헤게모니는 서울시립대 조경과가 주도하고 있는 듯하다. 외국에서 공부해온 조경전문가들이 리드하고 있는 셈이다. 한국형 정원 전문가인 나는 ‘한국형 정원계를 통 채로 말아먹고 싶다’고 주장하고 싶다. 나는 오직 한국형 정원-한국형 건축에 관심이 기울여왔다. 한국형 정원의 특징은 인공적인 것을 최소화하는 데 있다. 앞으로, 한국형 정원이 무언지, 그 대안을 제시하고 싶다.”

박태후는 국내의 조경 세태를 아래와 같이 꼬집었다.
“한국은 유행에 아주 민감한 나라이다. 제주도에 유채꽃을 심으니 전국에 유채꽃 밭이 유행했다. 제주도에서 올레 길이 뜨니 전국에 올래 길이 여러 군데 만들어졌다. 관광지에 목재 데크가 깔리더니 전국에 목재 데크 붐이 불었다. 나는 나의 정원에 왕버들 숲길을 만들었다. 나는 조경을 전공하진 않았다. 하지만, 지난 50년간 조경을 해왔다. 영국 정원 기술자들의 기술과 그들의 손으로 만든 순천만 정원을 보고 영국인들은 좋아라할 것이다. 자기들이 만든 정원이라고. 그런 순천만 정원을 우리나라 정부는 국가정원 1호라 했다. 뭔가 문제가 있다.”
죽설헌 내부는 서쪽 길과 동쪽으로 나 있는 길이 있다. 서쪽 길이 대문이 있는 입구 쪽이고 동쪽 길이 아래쪽 길이다. 길에는 숫 기와와 암 기와들을 담벼락으로 쌓아놓았다. 이 곳만의 특이한 낮은 담벼락이다. 이 길을 따라 양쪽으로 웅장한 숲이 펼쳐져 있다. 양쪽으로 길게 이어진 구부구비 골목길은 안정감을 준다. 지금은 꽃대와 꽃잎만 나와 있는 꽃 무릇들이 눈에 뜨인다. 키큰 나무 아래 꽃들이라 주눅 들어 있는 듯하지만 빨간 색 꽃들이 숲 아래를 강렬하게 받쳐준다, 나무 숲 사이사이로 햇볕이 천사처럼 내려와 이 길을 걷는 이들에게 포근한 영감을 주기에 충분하다.
화가 박태후는 화가 자신의 정원을 만들면서 일종의 폐쇄정책을 폈다. 지난 50년을 빗장 걸어놓고 정원을 가꿔왔다. 남(他人)이 하는 대로, 대세(大勢) 대로 따라가지 않기 위한 몸부림이었다.
“나는 지금까지 나의 정원을 철저하게 차단하려 해왔다. 내식대로 나의 정원을 지키려 했다.”이런 그의 신념은 죽설헌 정원 내부, 가는 곳마다 가득가득 고여 있다.
