강의원은 국회 국방위원회 소속으로 10월 국정감사에서 △ 문재인 정부 ‘북한 비핵화’ 정책의 허구성 △ 적 사이버 공격 대책 수립 △ 군인 및 군무원의 복지 증진 △ 대구 군공항 이전 사업과 군소음 민원 해소 △ 육군의 군무원 채용 비리 의심 △ 해군사관학교 잘못된 입시 제도 △ 고소득자의 병역 면제 △ 장기 군법무관 특권 폐지 등을 지적하는 등 날카로운 질문과 합리적인 대안으로 피감기관의 잘못된 정책에 대해 강도 높은 감사를 진행했다.
특히 방위사업청 국정감사에서는 ‘차기한국형전투기 사업(KF-21)에 참여한 인도네시아의 분담금 미납 문제에 대해 방위사업청의 해결 방법에 대해 확답’받았고, 종합감사에서는 ‘우리의 안보를 위협하는 북한의 미사일 시험 발사가 도발이 아니다’는 국방부장관의 발언을 이끌어내 언론의 주목을 받았다.
