신작 소설 『자물쇠 속의 아이들』을 펴낸 소설가 김영권의 말이다.
『자물쇠 속의 아이들』은 10대의 소년인 어린 북파공작원들이 극한의 훈련을 받고 적지로 올라가는 이야기를 담은 소설이다. 아직 공식적으로 그 규모나 실체가 밝혀지진 않았지만, 남북 간에 공작원 대결이 가장 치열했던 1960~1970년대에는 실제로 8~17세의 어린 소년들이 중정 물색조의 허풍에 속거나 반강제적인 방법에 의해 첩보 부대로 끌려갔고, 북파공작을 수행하다 목숨을 잃거나 행방불명되었다.
이 소설은 주인공 ‘청운’의 이야기를 중심으로 진행된다. 저자의 전작 『선감도-사라진 선감학원의 비극』에 나온 주인공이 이 소설에서도 활약하므로 『선감도』의 속편 격이라 할 수 있다.

김영권 작가는 ‘사이비 종교’에 갇혀 국가의 보호를 받지 못한 아이들과 국가에 속은 채 첩보 부대에 들어가 목숨을 잃는 아이들을 통해 국가의 민낯을 철저히 그려내며, ‘과연 국가란 무엇인가?’ 라는 의문을 국민들의 가슴속에 던진다.
