경북교육청(교육감 임종식)이 2026년 3월 개교를 목표로 ‘공립 대안학교’ 설립을 추진한다.
대안학교란 진로 탐색, 체험 등 개인의 소질과 적성 개발을 위해 보다 자율적인 교과프로그램을 위주로 운영하며 대안교육을 희망하는 학생과 학업중단 위기 학생, 학교 밖 청소년들을 주 대상으로 한다.

경북교육청은 공립 대안학교의 설립지로 기존 폐교 부지를 지리적 여건과 접근성 등을 충분히 고려하여 결정하겠다는 방침을 밝혔으며 학년 당 2학급, 총 6학급 규모로 고등학교 교육과정 중심의 기숙형 각종학교 형태로 설립될 계획을 전했다.
이를 위해 교육청읕 현재 대안교육 관련 전문가 테스크포스(TF)를 구성해 공립 대안학교 설립을 추진하고 있으며 2022년 교육환경평가와 재정투자심사, 2023년 예산 편성 및 시설공사 착수 등의 과정을 거쳐 2026년 3월 1일 개교를 목표로 하고 있다.
주원영 학생생활과장은 “공립 대안학교 설립을 통해 학업중단 위기를 겪고 있는 학생들을 적극 지원하고 대안교육에 대한 학생과 학부모의 요구에 부응할 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있기를 바란다.”고 밝혔다.
