고보옥 사장의 이 분야 사업 경력은 30여 년 째에 이른다. 충남 당진군에서 태어나 여고를 졸업하고 서울에 왔다. 화랑 사업체에 취직에 돼 미술을 공부하게 됐다고 한다. 고보옥 사장은 중국 연변대 미술학과(한국 지부에서 수업)를 졸업했다. 한국에 파견된 교수들로부터 4년 간 수업을 받았다. 여름-겨울 방학 때면 연변대를 방문, 현지 수업을 받기도 했다. 화가이기도 하다. 대형 캔버스에 천만송이 장미를 그린 그림으로 유명하다.
화가라서인지 국내의 미술품 또는 중국 미술품이나 도자기 등에 대해서도 조예(造詣)가 깊다.

그가 서울 종로의 전통시장인 ‘풍물시장’에 진출한 것은 7년 전. 가게 건물의 지하, 2층, 3층, 4층을 매장으로 쓰고 있다. 이 가게에 들어서면, 우선 모아진 작품 수에 놀란다. 사장 본인도 소장하고 있는 작품이 몇 점이나 되는지를 모를 정도로 다양한 작품을 소장하고 있다. 눈에 들어오는 작품 수만 계산해도 수 만점에 이를 것으로 추산된다. 갖가지 고미술-골동품-그림들이 매장에 가득하다. 유별난 가게이다.

그의 이런 사업은 이윤창출만은 아니라고 한다. 고미술-골동품-그림 등의 사고 파는 것 자체가 문화 활동이기 때문이다. 우리 고(古) 문화를 지키는 역할도 병행하고 있어서이다.
