한국자유총연맹(이하 총연맹)은 2월 14일자 보도자료를 통해 “이날 오후 3시, 서울 남산에 위치한 자유센터 미래홀에서 정기총회를 개최해 제20대 총재로 송영무 전 국방부 장관을 재선임 했다. 총연맹 제18대 총재의 사직으로 인한 잔여 임기를 제19대 총재로서 마무리 한 송영무 총재는 총연맹 규정에 따라 총재 후보자 추천위원회를 통해 제20대 총재 후보자로 추천 됐다”고 전하고 “오늘 코로나 방역지침에 맞춰 개최된 정기총회에 참석해 대의원들의 추대로 제20대 총재로 정식 선임되었고, 임기는 3년으로 2025년 2월 정기총회일까지”라고 밝혔다.
송영무 총재는 1973년 해군사관학교를 졸업 후 제1연평해전의 전공으로 충무무공훈장을 수훈한 무장으로, 제26대 해군 참모총장과 제45대 국방부 장관 등을 역임했다.
송영무 총재는 총재 선임 인사를 통해 “저를 믿고 제20대 총재로 재선출해 주신 대의원 여러분과 350만 회원님들께 진심으로 감사의 말씀을 올린다”라며, “다가올 대선과 지방선거에 있어 총연맹은 정관에 명시된 대로 엄정한 정치적 중립을 지켜야 한다”라고 회원들에 강조했으며, “자유민주주의를 항구적으로 발전시키고, 자유민주적 기본질서에 입각한 평화통일을 추구해야 하는 총연맹의 정관 정신 실천을 통해, 국민의 가장 가까운 곳에서 국민과 함께 호흡하는 국민정신운동단체로서 거듭날 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 다하겠다”라고 선임 소회를 밝혔다.
한국자유총연맹은 UN 경제사회 이사회의 특별협의 지위를 부여받은 국내 최대 국민정신운동 단체로서 자유민주주의 수호를 위한 대국민 홍보와 교육, 어머니 포순이 봉사단과 지구촌 재난구조단 활동 등 다양한 국내외 공익 활동에 주력하고 있다.
