[브레이크뉴스=이성용기자] 창원시(시장 허성무)는 24일 오전 의창구 북면 감계리 일원에서 제77회 식목일을 기념하기 위해 나무심기 행사를 가졌다.
올해 식목행사 장소는 지난해 창원시가 북면감계지구에 ‘우리동네 휠링숲길 제1호’로 조성한 곳으로 행사 참여자들은 나무식재 요령을 교육받은 후 산벚나무 170본과 산수국 1,200본을 등산로변에 식재했다. 이들 수종은 미세먼지 저감효과는 물론 꽃이 피는 화목류여서 향후 숲길 이용자에게 볼거리와 힐링의 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.
시는 미세먼지와 도시열섬을 줄이고 탄소흡수원인 도시숲 확충의 중요성을 인식하고 2011년부터 2028년까지 ‘시민과 함께하는 2천만 그루 나무심기 추진계획’을 수립하여 매년 백만그루 나무심기를 추진하고 있으며, 지난해까지 총 1512만본의 수목을 식재했다.

허성무 시장은 “최근 발생한 대형산불, 지구온난화로 인한 이상고온 등 기후위기의 심각성을 경험하며, 2050 탄소중립의 불가피성이 부각되고 있어 나무를 심고 가꾸는 일이 매우 중요하다”며 “미래세대를 배려하고 ‘녹색도시 창원’을 만드는데 동참해주기를 바란다”고 말했다.
