남해군은 2019년 4월부터 남해제일고등학교에서 봉천 합류부에 이르는 북변천 570m 구간에 119억원을 투입해 하천 수질 정화시설 등을 설치했다.
남해읍 시가지와 전통시장에서 북변천으로 유입되던 오염수를 인공습지로 끌어들여 수질을 정화한 후 일부는 남해읍 전통시장 앞 복개수로로 방류해 수로 내부를 청소했다.
또 일부는 남해제일고등학교 앞으로 방류해 하천유지 용수로 기능할 수 있게 했다. 오염 하천수 처리 규모는 ‘3,000㎥/일’이다.
최근 경상남도보건환경연구원 수질검사 결과 BOD기준 VI등급(매우나쁨) 에서 I~II등급(매우좋음~약간좋음)으로 수질이 개선된 것으로 나타났다.
