시티넷은 1987년 유엔아시아태평양경제사회위원회 (UNESCAP), 유엔개발계획(UNDP), 유엔인간정주계획(UN-Habitat) 합작으로 설립되어 아태지역 173개의 도시회원들로 구성되어 있다. 도시 간 국제기구 중 가장 큰 네트워크와 가장 오래된 역사를 자랑하는 시티넷은 인구 증가, 주거 및 식수 부족, 위생문제 등 도시가 직면한 공동의 문제를 해결하는 것을 시작으로 도시 역량 강화 사업, 도시 간 협력사업 등의 프로젝트를 통해 기후변화대응, 재난관리, 도시 인프라 문제 해결, 지속가능개발목표 (SDGs) 달성에 이르기까지 영역을 확대하고 있다.
