이에 대전지방국토관리청은 지난 2016년 총 사업비 2,264억원(시설비1,736억원, 보상비 528억원)을 투입해 공사를 진행중이다. 공정률은 65%를 넘어섰으며 내년 6월 준공을 목표로 공사가 한창이다.
이 공사로 기존 2차로 도로는 연장 14.76㎞, 폭 20m의 4차로 도로로 확·포장된다. 도로 선형 개선을 통한 교통 흐름을 원활히 하기 위해 입체 교차로 4개소 등 교차로 16개소와 터널 2개소(497m), 교량 16개소(1,253m)가 설치된다.

이 도로가 개통되면 대천~원산도~태안반도로 이어지는 서해안 관광벨트와 백제문화권이 연계돼 지역 간 균형발전이 가속화될 것으로 기대된다.
