올해 4월에 울진군의료원에서는 공중보건의사 3명이 복무 만료되어 안과, 피부과, 재활의학과 및 계약의사인 비뇨의학과 의사의 퇴사로 진료과목에 공백이 발생하였다.
현재 공중보건의사는 몇 년 전부터 의학전문대학원 출범과 여성 의과대학생의 증가로 인해 한해 배출되는 신규 공중보건의사는 급감하고 있는 실정이다.
또한, 2021년 행정안전부에서 발표한 자료에 따르면 전국 229곳 시군구 대상으로 105곳의 인구소멸위험지역을 지정하였으며, 울진군 또한 인구감소 지역으로 구분되어 있다.

이에 군민들이 먼 지역으로 가지 않고도 치료받을 수 있도록 상급의료기관과의 협력체계 구축으로 필수의료 제공을 하고자 실질적인 의료인력 문제 해결을 위해 경북대학교병원을 방문하여 김용림 병원장 및 공공의료본부장을 만나 울진군의료원의 현안을 설명하고 협조를 요청했다.
이번 업무협의를 통해 경북대학교병원은 순회진료 실시는 1~2개 진료과목에 대해 긍정적으로 검토하여 해당 진료과와 협의하고 조기 시행될 수 있도록 의사를 표명하였으며, 공공임상교수제도는 성공적인 제도의 정착을 위해 양 의료기관이 서로 협조할 것을 약속했다.
정호성 의료원장은 “농어촌 지역인 울진군에 적합한 특화된 진료체계 구축으로 의료공백 해소를 위해 최선의 노력을 하겠다”고 전했다.
