김경일 파주시장은 18일 파주를 방문한 ‘전직 미 국회의원협회’(FMC, Former Members of Congress) 방한단을 만났다.
김창준 전 하원의원을 포함한 7명의 전직 하원의원·주지사로 구성된 방한단과 그 일행은 이날 파주시를 방문해 DMZ 지역 등을 둘러보고 김 시장과 자리를 함께 했다.

오찬을 겸한 간담으로 마련된 이날 만남에서 김 시장은 파주시가 “과거 접경도시·군사도시 이미지가 많았지만 최근 신도시 개발과 광역교통 확충으로 인구가 급증했고 LG디스플레이를 비롯한 기업들이 들어오며 첨단산업도시로 발전하고 있다”며 “50만 도시에서 100만 도시로 나아가는 첫 발걸음을 내딛고 있는 중”이라고 소개했다.

또 “앞으로 군사시설이 많은 파주 북부지역을 획기적으로 발전시키기 위한 계획도 가지고 있다”며 향후 FMC 회원들이 기업투자를 비롯해 다양한 분야에서 파주와의 교류 협력이 활발해질 수 있도록 관심과 역할을 당부했다.
