충청지역 교통사고 사망자 수가 12.9% 감소된 것으로 조사됐다.
20일 대전국토청에 따르면 올 상반기 충청권 교통사고 사망자가 전년동기대비 225명에서 196명으로 감소했다.
지역별로 세종, 충북, 충남 지역의 전년대비 사망자 수는 약 13% 이상 줄어들었다. 그러나 대전은 작년과 동일해 교통사고 감소를 위한 추가 대책이 필요하다.
이번 성과는 노인, 어린이 등에 대한 교통 안전 교육, 음주 단속 등 법규위반 단속 강화, 교통안전 취약지점 개선, 사업용 자동차 안전점검 강화 등 지속 추진한 결과로 분석된다.

하반기는 교통사고 감소를 위해 상반기 관계기관과 협력한 성과를 바탕으로 교통 이용자 안전교육 및 시설 개선 등 추진에 나선다.
교통약자 사고가 다수 발생한 지자체 대상으로 맞춤형 안전교육과 캠페인을 실시하고, 보행자 보호를 위해 속도저감시설, 단속카메라, 횡단보도 조명시설 등 안전시설을 설치 예정이다.
이어 마을을 통과하는 일반국도에 대해 교통정온화시설 시범사업을 추진할 계획이다.
이와 함께 사고 잦은 곳, 교통안전시설, 위험도로 등 교통 시설물 개선 사업을 지속 추진할 방침이다.
대전청 관계자는 “운전자의 안전의식이 높아지면서 금년 상반기 충청권 교통사고 사망자가 크게 감소했다. 금년 하반기도에도 교통 관계기관과 합동 지속적으로 교통사고 사망자 줄이기 대책과 함께 안전한 보행환경 구축을 위해 최선을 다할 것”이라고 말했다.
