코웨이는 올해 초 ESG 경영 일환으로 장애인 고용 확대를 위해 한국장애인고용공단과 장애인고용증진 업무 협약을 체결한데 이어, 지난 5월 휠체어농구단을 설립했다. 장애인 스포츠 선수들이 안정적인 환경에서 선수 생활에 전념할 수 있도록 키다리아저씨 역할을 자처하고 나선 것이다.
서울을 연고지로 하는 코웨이 휠체어농구단은 국내 6개의 휠체어농구 실업팀 중 민간 기업에서 운영하고 있는 유일한 휠체어농구팀이다. 임찬규 단장을 중심으로 국내 휠체어농구 선수 출신 1호 지도자인 김영무 감독 등 4명의 코치진과 11명의 현역 선수 등 총 15명으로 구성돼 활동하고 있다.
코웨이는 휠체어농구단 선수 전원을 직원으로 채용해 안정된 환경에서 훈련할 수 있도록 운동 용품 및 훈련 장소 등을 일체 지원하고 있다. 선수들의 훈련 시간을 근로 시간으로 인정해 매월 급여를 지급하고 코웨이 임직원의 복지 혜택도 제공하고 있다.

이러한 문제를 해결하고자 코웨이가 다시 한번 팔을 걷어 올렸다. 코웨이는 서울시장애인체육회와 함께 휠체어농구 미래를 이끌어갈 유망주 육성 프로젝트를 기획했다.
코웨이 휠체어농구단에 정규 선수와 별도로 육성(후보) 선수 군을 모집하고 신규 선수 양성을 위한 훈련 프로그램을 마련했다.
이와 관련, 코웨이는 이달부터 휠체어농구 육성선수 공개 모집을 진행하고 있다. 모집 대상은 하반신 장애를 가진 30대 이하 성인 남성으로, 운동 경력과 관계없이 코웨이 휠체어농구단 훈련에 참여 가능하고, 휠체어 농구에 대해 관심 있는 장애인이라면 누구나 참여 가능하다.
연내 상시 모집하며 지원자를 대상으로 장애 등급 확인과 개별 인터뷰를 거쳐 육성 선수를 선발한다. 공개 모집을 통해 선발된 육성 선수는 코웨이 휠체어농구단에 소속돼 정규 훈련 및 휠체어농구 양성 과정에 참여하게 된다.
