우리말살리는겨레모임(공동대표 이대로)측은 10월5일 “우리말살리는겨레모임(공동대표 이대로)은 해마다 한글날에 우리말 지킴이와 헤살꾼(남의 일에 짓궂게 훼방을 놓는 사람)을 발표하고 있다. 올해도 한글날을 앞두고 으뜸 지킴이로는 우리 말글을 살리려고 애쓰는 ”울산시 교육청(교육감 노옥희)과 울산시(시장 김두겸)를 뽑고, 으뜸 헤살꾼으로 부산시를 영어 상용도시로 만드는 정책을 추진하는 박형준 부산시장과 하윤수 부산시 교육감을 뽑았다“고 밝혔다.
우리말살리는겨레모임측은 “김영삼 정부가 세계화를 외치면서 영어 바람을 일으켜서 얼빠진 나라가 되어 나라가 망해 국제투기자본의 밥이 되는 것을 보면서 우리 겨레 얼이 담긴 우리 겨레말을 살리고 빛내어 튼튼한 나라를 만들자고 1998년에 모임을 만들고 해마다 한글날에 우리말 지킴이와 헤살꾼을 뽑아 발표했다. 이 일을 한 것은 우리말보다 외국말을 지나치게 섬기는 잘못된 버릇을 바로잡고 우리말을 우리 글자인 한글로 적는 말글살이를 해서 얼 찬 자주 국가를 만들자는 뜻과 꿈을 가지고 시작한 것”이라면서 “한자를 섬기는 버릇은 많이 사라졌으나 아직도 일본 식민지 교육으로 길든 일본 한자말이 교과서와 공문서, 전문 서적에 그대로 쓰이고 있고, 거기다가 영어 섬기는 바람이 일어나 거리에는 영어 간판이 자꾸 늘어나고 회사나 아파트 이름은 온통 영어이며, 공공기관이 국어기본법까지 무시하고 말장난하고 요즘에 부산시는 부산시를 영어 상용도시로 만들겠다고 한다. 우리는 5000년 긴 역사를 가진 겨레요 나라이며, 세계에서 가장 훌륭한 제 글자인 한글을 가졌지만 한글이 태어나고 우리 겨레말을 우리 글자로 적는 말글살이를 해본 일이 없다”고 강조했다.
이어 “이제 제 겨레말보다 힘센 나라말을 더 섬기는 못된 버릇을 버리고 우리말글로 이름도 짓고, 교육도 하고 말글살이를 해야겠다. 그래서 올해에는 일본 식민지 때에 일본제국이 우리말을 쓰지 못하게 하고 일본어(국어) 상용 정책을 편 것처럼 영어 상용도시를 만들겠다는 부산시(시장 박형준)와 부산시 교육청(교육감 하윤수)를 우리말 으뜸 헤살꾼으로 뽑고, 영어를 마구 쓰는 서울시(시장 오세훈)와 국어기본법을 무시하는 국회방송을 우리말 헤살꾼으로 뽑았다.그리고 우리말을 살리고 빛내려고 애쓰는 울산시(시장 김두겸)와 울산시 교육청(교육감 노옥희)를 으뜸 지킴이로 뽑고 우리 말글을 살리고 빛내려고 애쓰는 부경대 김영환 교수와 진주시 (사)토박이말 바라기 모임을 우리말 지킴이로 뽑았다”고 알렸다.
