이상민 행정안전부 장관이 30일 '이태원 참사' 관련 브리핑에서 이같은 책임 회피성 발언을 한 데 대해 여야는 한목소리로 질타하고 나섰다.
김기현 국민의힘 의원은 31일 오전 MBC 라디오 '김종배의 시선집중'에서 "국민들의 아픔을 이해하고 동참하는 모습이 아닌 형태의 그런 언행은 조심했어야 한다"며 "사람이 10만명 모인다는 얘기가 있었기 때문에 사전에 교통대책을 마련하고, 안전을 위해 통행을 제한하거나 현장에서 사람이 밀집하지 않도록 대책을 세웠어야 한다는 점에서 굉장히 소홀했다"고 비판했다.
같은당 조경태 의원도 이날 TBS라디오 '김어준의 뉴스공장'에서 "어떤 입장에서 그런 말을 했는지 모르지만 썩 설득력 있는 표현은 아니었다"며 "너무도 슬프고 참담한 심정인데, 장관의 발언 한마디가 이런 논란을 빚게 하는 것은 유감스럽다는 생각"이라고 했다.
김종혁 국민의힘 비상대책위원도 "일반 국민이 듣기에 적절한 발언은 아니었다"며 "인파가 이 정도로 몰릴 것으로 예상했고 방송사 등이 이태원 축제를 보도하며 관심이 크게 고조됐는데 좀더 세심한 배려와 준비를 했어야 했다. 나중에 규명돼야 할 것"이라고 지적했다.
이재명 더불어민주당 대표는 이날 오전 국회에서 열린 당 최고위원회의에서 "정부 당국이 '책임이 없다', '할 만큼 했다'는 태도로 국민들을 분노하게 할 게 아니다"라며 "낮은 자세로 오로지 국민만을 위하고 모든 것이 나의 책임이라는 자세로 사태 수습에 최선을 다하고, 집중해주길 바란다"고 비판했다.
이재명 대표는 이어 "참혹한 사태가 벌어진 것에 대해서 왜 그런 사안이 벌어졌는지, 앞으로 이런 일 막기 위해 어떤 조치 필요한지에 대해 당연히 사후조치가 뒤따라야 하겠지만 현재로서는 일단 수습과 위로에 총력을 다할 때"라고 말했다.
우상호 민주당 의원도 이날 TBS라디오와의 인터뷰에서 "잘 모르면 입을 닫고 있어야지, 변명하다가 국민 화를 북돋우는지 모르겠다"며 "경찰보다 더 권위 있는 질서 유지 요원이 어딨겠느냐. 이 정도 사고가 날 줄 예상할 수 있는 사람은 없지만 결국 안전불감증이 이런 대형 사고를 키우는 것이고, 그런 측면에서 이상민 장관의 발언은 아주 부적절했다"고 밝혔다.
박찬대 민주당 최고위원은 이날 YTN라디오에서 "참사나 황당한 사고가 계속 발생하는 것을 감내하겠다는 의지인지 그 내용의 진위 자체를 알기 어려운 정도로 무책임이나 회피 발언이어서 많은 국민을 분노케 했다"고 꼬집었다.
