브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 북한이 연쇄적으로 미사일 발사와 포병 사격을 하는 등 도발을 강행하자 한미는 대규모 연합공준훈련인 '비질런트 스톰(Vigilant Storm)' 기간을 연장하기로 했다.
한미훈련 기간이 연장된 것은 이례적인 사례로, 북한의 잇단 도발에 맞대응하는 성격이 강하다.
공군은 3일 "최근 지속적인 북한 도발과 관련해 연합공중훈련 '비질런트 스톰' 기간을 연장하기로 했다"며 "공군작전사령부와 주한 미 7공군사령부는 북한의 도발로 고조되고 있는 현 안보위기 상황 하에 한미동맹의 굳건한 연합방위태세 유지가 필요하다는 것에 공감했다"고 밝혔다.
당초 비질런트 스톰 훈련은 지난달 31일부터 시작해 오는 4일까지 진행할 예정이었으며 연장 기간에 대해선 협의 중인 것으로 알려졌다.
한편 비질런트 스톰 훈련은 우리 공군의 F-35A, F-15K, (K)F-16, KC-330 등 140여 대와 미군의 F-35B, EA-18, U-2, KC-135 등 최신예 항공기 240여 대가 참여해 실전을 방불케 하는 대규모 공중전투훈련이다.
특히 일본 이와쿠니 미군기지에 주둔하고 있는 F-35B 스텔스기가 최초로 국내 기지에 착륙해 훈련에 투입됐다. F-35B는 수직이착륙이 가능한 기종으로, 항공모함이나 강습상륙함에서 출격할 수 있어 적군에겐 더욱 위협적이다.
