최종현학술원 이사장인 최태원 회장은 5일(현지시간) 학술원이 미국 워싱턴 D.C. 인근에서 마련한 ‘2022 트랜스 퍼시픽 다이얼로그(Trans-Pacific Dialogue, TPD)’에 참석해 글로벌 이슈 해결을 위해 한·미·일이 함께 지혜를 모을 것을 강조했다.
TPD는 한·미·일 3국의 전현직 고위 관료와 세계적 석학, 싱크탱크, 재계 인사들이 한자리에 모여 동북아와 태평양 지역의 국제 현안을 논의하고 경제안보 협력의 해법을 모색하는 집단지성 플랫폼으로 지난해 처음 열렸다.
국제 정세의 불확실성이 증대됨에 따라 올해는 △미·중 전략 경쟁 △우크라이나 전쟁 이후 미국의 글로벌 전략 △북핵 위기 △첨단과학 혁신이 지정학에 미치는 영향 △글로벌 공급망의 미래와 인플레이션 등의 주제로 다양한 논의가 이어졌다.
최 회장은 첫 순서인 ‘한·일 특별세션’에서 “우크라이나 전쟁과 글로벌 공급망 문제 등 지정학적 도전에 직면해 있는 지금 한국과 일본은 단순히 관계 개선을 넘어 글로벌 차원에서 기후변화를 비롯한 인류 공통의 과제를 해결하기 위해 긴밀히 협력해야 한다”고 말했다.
이날 특별세션에는 조태용 주미 한국대사와 도미타 코지 주미 일본대사가 나란히 앉아 눈길을 끌었다. 조 대사는 “한일 문제는 해결하기 어려운 문제임에도 불구하고 양국 지도자들의 신뢰와 호의를 기반으로 대화가 진전될 것”이라며 “양국의 관계 개선이 앞으로 환태평양 지역의 협력과 상생에 기여하게 될 것이다”고 전했다.
도미타 대사는 “일본과 한국이 협력의 범위를 넓혀 양국의 관계를 더 큰 차원인 세계적인 맥락에 놓을 필요가 있다”며 “서로의 파트너십에 대한 새로운 자신감을 가지고 긍정적인 미래를 기대할 것이다”고 말했다.
