[브레이크뉴스[=배종태 기자] 부산시는 제43회 부산국제단편영화제가 23일부터 28일까지 6일간 영화의전당과 BNK부산은행 아트시네마 모퉁이극장 등 부산 일원에서 개최된다고 밝혔다.
1980년 시작된 부산국제단편영화제는 국내 최대 규모의 국제단편영화제로 올해 43회를 맞았다. 부산시가 후원하고 사단법인 부산국제단편영화제가 주최 주관한다.
올해 영화제는 시네마 앤 뤼미에르를 주제로 영화의 본질적 요소인 빛과 영상의 미학을 집중 조명하며 영화의 기원과 확장을 함께 탐색한다.
이번 영화제에는 43개국 148편의 단편영화가 상영된다. 특히 124개국에서 총 5966편이 출품돼 역대 높은 참여를 기록했으며 엄격한 심사를 거쳐 국제경쟁 40편과 한국경쟁 20편이 최종 선정됐다.
한불 수교 140주년을 기념해 프랑스가 주빈국으로 선정된 점도 눈길을 끈다. 프랑스는 주빈국 제도 도입 첫해인 2012년에 이어 두 번째로 주빈국에 이름을 올렸다. 영화제는 한불 교차된 시선 특별상영을 비롯해 시네마테크 프랑세즈 특별전 누벨바그의 빛 기획전 등을 통해 프랑스 영화의 역사와 예술성을 폭넓게 소개한다.
개막식은 23일 오후 7시 영화의전당 하늘연극장에서 열린다. 개막작으로는 프랑스 언제나 무언가 잊어버린 것이 있다 중국 회전 교차로 독일 존재하지 않았던 영화 네덜란드 패니 등 4편이 상영된다. 행사에서는 가수 겸 작곡가 유발이의 공연도 함께 진행돼 영화와 음악이 어우러진 무대를 선보인다.
영화제 기간에는 관객과 영화인이 직접 소통하는 다양한 프로그램도 마련된다. 감독과의 대담과 라운드테이블 등 부대행사가 진행되며 참여형 프로그램을 통해 영화에 대한 이해를 높일 수 있도록 했다.
올해부터는 단편영화 제작지원사업 일정도 조정됐다. 공개 발표는 25일 영화제 기간 중 진행되며 최종 선정작은 28일 폐막식에서 발표될 예정이다.
폐막식은 28일 오후 7시 영화의전당에서 열린다. 국제경쟁과 한국경쟁 부문 최우수 작품에는 각각 상이 수여되며 해당 작품은 미국 아카데미 시상식 단편영화 부문 후보로 자동 추천된다. 부산국제단편영화제는 국내 최초의 아카데미 공식 인증 영화제로 평가받고 있다.

The 43rd Busan International Short Film Festival will run from April 23 to 28 across Busan, including venues such as the Busan Cinema Center and the BNK Busan Bank Art Cinema, city officials said.
Launched in 1980, the festival is the largest international short film festival in Korea. It is supported by the Busan Metropolitan Government and organized by the Busan International Short Film Festival.
This year’s theme, Cinema and Lumiere, highlights the essential elements of film—light and image—while exploring the origins and evolution of cinema.
A total of 148 short films from 43 countries will be screened. The festival received 5,966 submissions from 124 countries, marking a significant level of global participation. From these, 40 films were selected for the international competition and 20 for the Korean competition.
In celebration of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and France, France has been selected as the guest country of honor. It previously held the same status in 2012 when the program was first introduced. Special programs include Crossed Perspectives: Korea and France, a Cinematheque Francaise showcase, and a Nouvelle Vague retrospective, offering a broad look at French cinema.
The opening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on April 23 at the Busan Cinema Center. Four films will be screened as opening selections: France’s Something Is Always Left Behind, China’s The Roundabout, Germany’s A Film That Never Existed, and the Netherlands’ Fanny. A live performance by singer-songwriter Yuval will also be featured.
Throughout the festival, audiences will have opportunities to engage with filmmakers through talks and roundtable discussions. Interactive programs are also planned to encourage deeper understanding of short films.
The festival has also advanced the schedule of its short film production support program. Project pitches will take place on April 25, with final selections to be announced at the closing ceremony.
The closing ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on April 28. Top award winners in both the international and Korean competitions will be automatically eligible for consideration in the short film category at the Academy Awards. The Busan International Short Film Festival is the first in Korea to receive official Academy accreditation.
