기억에서 사라져가는 마을 이름과 산, 골짜기, 고개, 들판 등의 우리말 이름을 전부 조사해 지도에 위치를 표시한 이 책자는 지명조사에 대한 새로운 지평을 열었다는 평가와 함께 많은 관심을 받고 있다.
사회적 협동조합 아시랑이 함안군의 지원으로 펴낸 '함안군 우리 마을 땅이름'은 전계가 없는 땅이름 종합 인문 지리서로서 자신이 살고 있는 마을에 대한 상세한 정보를 제공한다는 점에서 주민들의 큰 호응을 얻고 있으며 지명학회 등에서도 높은 평가를 받고 있다.

2001년~2003년에 지역 민간단체인 아라가야향토사연구회에서 실시한 기초조사를 바탕으로, 2019년부터 2022년까지 사회적 협동조합 아시랑에서 수차례 마을을 방문해 고유한 이름을 조사했으며 이를 정리해 이번에 발간하게 됐다.
10개 읍·면을 각각의 책으로 묶은 낱본 2000권과 4권으로 묶은 합본 500질 등 두 가지 방식으로 출판되었으며 소요된 사업비는 총 4억 5000만 원이다.
해방 이후 우리나라의 땅이름을 조사해 집대성한 자료는 한글학회에서 펴낸 <한국지명총람(1978년)>이 유일하다.
한국지명총람에서 조사한 함안군 땅이름은 3390개이지만 '함안군 우리마을 땅이름'에서는 7202개를 조사해 세밀함을 더했으며 특히 지도에 위치를 표시함으로써 정확한 근거를 남기게 됐다.

한편으로 이번 자료가 발간된 것은 함안군 기록문화의 역사적 전통과도 관련이 있다는 분석이다.
1587년 편찬된 '함주지'는 우리나라 최초의 사찬읍지로서 국가가 아닌 지역에서 편찬한 최초의 읍지로서 후대 읍지 편찬의 모범이 됐으며, 1639년 편찬된 '금라전신록'도 함안군에서 전해지는 시문을 정리한 것으로 지역 역사연구에 큰 도움이 되고 있다.
