브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 조 바이든 미국 대통령이 20일(현지시간) 러시아와 전쟁이 한창인 우크라이나 수도 키이우를 깜짝 방문했다.
이를 두고 외신들은 이번 '깜짝 방문'을 위해 수개월에 걸친 고도의 군사 전략과 계획이 있었다고 전했다.
월스트리트저널(WSJ) 보도에 따르면 미국 행정부는 바이든 대통령의 키이우 순방은 몇개월 전부터 계획됐다.
러시아의 우크라이나 침공 1주년을 앞두고 우크라이나에 미국이 강력한 지지를 하고 있음을 러시아에 보여주기 위한 목적이라고 설명했다.
이를 위해 순방은 비밀리에 추진됐다. 미국이 직접 통제하고 있지 않은, 전쟁 중인 국가의 수도를 방문하는 것은 굉장히 이례적이기 때문에 더욱 비밀리에 부쳐졌다. 백악관과 국가안보회의(NSC), 비밀경호국에서도 극소수만 알고 있었다고 한다.
바이든 대통령 방문 직전 키이우 일부 지역에 강력한 정부의 통제가 시작된 뒤에야 소문이 퍼지기 시작한 것으로 전해졌다.
바이든 대통령은 지난 19일 새벽 3시30분경 백악관을 나와 앤드루스 공군기지로 이동해, 전용기에 탑승했다. 탑승한 전용기도 일반적으로 사용하는 에어포스원이 아닌 보잉 757모델의 에어포스 C-32기를 이용했다.
바이든 대통령이 탄 전용기는 독일 램스테인 공군기지로 날아가, 한차례 급유를 받은 뒤 다시 우크라이나 키이우를 향했다.
램스테인 기지에서 탑승자들은 내리지 않았고, 기내 창문은 모두 가려놨다. 급유와 함께 어둠이 깔릴 때까지 기다린 뒤 폴란드 AF1 제슈프-야시온카 공항을 향해 비행했다.
제슈프-야시온카 공항은 우크라이나 전쟁이 발발한 이후 미국의 우크라이나 무기 지원이 주로 이뤄진 곳으로 알려져 있다. 이곳에서 바이든 대통령은 기차로 바꿔탄 뒤 20일 오전 8시7분께 키이우에 도착했다.
한편 미국 공군은 바이든 대통령이 키이우에 머무는 동안 공중조기경보기인 E-3 센트리와 정찰기 RC-135W 등을 운영하며 삼엄한 감시 태세를 이어갔다.

Visits to the warring nation's capital, which are not directly controlled by the United States, have been kept more secret because it is highly unusual. It is said that very few people knew about it even in the White House, the National Security Council, and the Secret Service.
Rumors reportedly began to spread only after strong government control began in parts of Kiu just before President Biden's visit.
President Biden left the White House at around 3:30 a.m. on the 19th and moved to Andrews Air Force Base and boarded a private plane. The private jet on board also used the Boeing 757 model Air Force C-32, not the commonly used Air Force One.
President Biden's private plane flew to Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, received one refueling, and headed back to Kiu, Ukraine.
No passengers got off at the Lamstein base, and all the in-flight windows were covered. After waiting for darkness to fall with refueling, he flew toward Poland's AF1 Zeszew-Yasionka airport.
The Jeshuf-Yashionka airport is known to have been mainly provided with U.S. weapons aid to Ukraine since the outbreak of the Ukrainian war. Here, President Biden switched to a train and arrived in Kiu at 8:07 a.m. on the 20th.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Air Force continued its strict surveillance posture while President Biden stayed in Kiu by operating an aerial early warning aircraft, E-3 Century, and a reconnaissance aircraft, RC-135W.
