살아남으려면, 이 세상에서 하나뿐인 그 무엇? 그 무엇을 찾아내야 한다.
필자는 브레이크뉴스 지난 2010년 12월9일자 “노벨 화가상(畫家償)이 있다면 김원준 화백을 추천” 제목의 글에서 소호(小昊) 김원준 화백에 관한 글을 썼었다.
이 글에서 “40대 때 화가로서 명성을 날렸던 김원준 화백이 갑자기 화단에서 사라졌다(?). 시골로 떠나 칩거하며, 그림만 그리는 생활로 자신의 몸을 은둔 시켰기 때문이다”면서 “1993년, 그는 경기도 가평군 상면 수목원로 262-10(옛 주소는 상면 행현리 546-1번지. 미술관 전화 010-5558-1312)으로 이사를 했다. 대지 1백 50평에 60여평의 한옥이 있는 집이었다. 한옥은 말 그대로 폐가였다. 그는 대문을 안에서 잠가 걸고 그림 그리기에만 몰두했다. 그가 시골 마을의 이웃에게 얼굴을 내민 것은 이사 온 지 17년만이었다고 한다.”고 소개했었다.
이어 “무문관(無門關)에서 수년간씩 수행했던 스님들이 있다. 무문관이란 출입하는 문(門)이 없는 수행처를 뜻한다. 일체 방 밖을 나오지 않고 방 안에서만 수행한다. 무문관에서 수행하는 수도승들은 자신이 도를 깨쳤다고 생각되면 그때서야 문을 열고 나온다. 김 화백은 어쩜 무문관에서 수행해온 수도승을 닮은 화가이다. 17년간이나 바깥출입을 자제하고 칩거상태로 그림을 그렸으니까. 그래서 그의 그름은 득도의 경지에 다다라 특출나다. 고통어린 창작 기간을 거쳐 화사하게 핀 환희의 기쁨이 화폭에 담겨 있기 때문일 것이다. 그의 작품을 보노라면, 한 작품 한 작품이 이 세상에는 없는, 유일한 작품이라는 것을 느낄 수 있다.”면서 “김 화백은 지금까지 2,000여점의 그림을 그렸다. 칩거하는 기간에 1,000여점의 그림을 완성했다고 한다. 그 기간에는 그림을 세상에 내놓지 않았다. 이 때문에 가난과 청빈이 그의 벗이었다“고 기술했었다.

필자는 당시 이 글의 말미에서 “노벨 화가상이 있다면, 한국인 화가로서 득도경지에 이른, 소호 김원준 화백을 추천하고 싶다!” 고 덧붙였었다.
필자가 김원준 화백을 만났을 때는 지난 2010년 12월. 그후 13년이 지난, 지난 2월17일 김원준 화백을 다시금 만났다. 그 동안에도 그의 예술적인 고행(苦行)은 멈추지 않았음을 확인했다.
김원준 화백은 "현재 작품을 완성, 소장하고 있는 자신의 작품(추상화) 수가 3,000점을 넘었다"고 했다. 추상화 분야의 대가인 것. 그간 창작해온 3,000점의 그림들을 판매하지 않고, 완벽하게 소장해왔다고. “일부 대기업 회장들도 나의 작품들을 좋아한다”고 말했다.
김원준 화백. 그의 나이는 올해 75세. 5세 때부터 붓을 들었다고 한다. 그림은 스승이 없는 독학(獨學)이었다. 70년 그림인생, 외길을 걸었다. 창작 작품의 특성은 모든 작품이 유화-일필휘지(붓질 한 번에 완성한 작품)다. 지금도 쉼 없는, 화업(畫業) 정진의 지속이다. 대단한 장정(長征)이다.
