오는 5월 1일 기념행사를 맡아 주관하는 단체는 백산고등학교, 부안군청, 부안동학농민혁명기념사업회다. 백산고등학교는 “동학농민혁명의 정의(正義), 내 삶의 정의(正義)”라는 깃발아래 동학농민혁명의 주요 전개 과정을 파악하고, 역사적 의의를 기억하는 기념행사를 갖는다. 동학농민혁명의 주요 가치관을 이해하고, 이를 현대적인 방법으로 재해석하여 동학농민혁명을 기념할 수 있는 여러 상징을 디자인하여 동학농민혁명의 가치를 지역민을 비롯, 타지역 주민들의 관심을 불러일으킬 수 있도록 하는 게 목적이다. 권력과 불의에 저항했던 동학농민혁명의 정신을 되새기고, 정의(正義)에 대해 고민하며 이를 자신의 삶에 적용할 방법을 찾아보는 것에 의미를 둔다.
이번 행사의 프로그램은 동학농민혁명의 전개과정 학습, 동학농민혁명 굿즈제작, 동학농민혁 명을 기념하는 디자인으로 만장기를 만들어 거는 일이다. 동학농민혁명의 주요 장면을 연극으로 표현하기, 녹두떡 먹기, 전봉준 관련 독서 수업, 정의에 대한 생활 글쓰기 및 정의로운 나의 삶에 대한 다짐 세우기를 한다.
‘벌거벗은 한국사’를 비롯한 동학농민혁명에 대한 다양한 미디어 프로그램과 한국사 수업시간을 활용하여 동학농민혁명에 대해 이해를 돕는 활동 또한 충분히 한다. 한국사 수업을 활용하여 동학농민혁명 백산대회의 의의를 학생들에게 알리는 것도 목적이다. 동학농민혁명이 내세웠던 5가지 핵심 가치를 학습하고, 이를 표현하는 만장기를 다양한 방식으로 디자인한다.

학생들의 작품 중, 우수한 작품을 선정하여 부안군과 함께 만장기를 제작하여 기념행사 주간에 걸어놓도록 한다. 우수한 아이디어를 제시한 학생은 시상한다. ‘동학농민혁명 굿즈’ 상품 제작 및 배포하여 학생들의 동학농민혁명에 대한 관심도를 높이기 위해 티셔츠, 메모지, 노트 등 각종 굿즈를 제작하고 기념행사 전 미리 배포하여 학생들의 관심도를 높이고자 한다. 동학농민혁명군의 일원이 되어 그들의 절박하고, 저항할 수밖에 없었던 마음에 공감하는 기회로 삼는다.
시로 만나는 전봉준 강민숙 시인의 ‘채석강을 읽다’를 읽고 다양한 독후 활동을 한다. 시 패러디하기 시인의 ‘채석강을 읽다’ 시집에 담긴 시를 한 편 선택하여 동학농민혁명에 대한 내용으로 바꾸어 자신의 시를 써본다. 모둠원들과 서로 비교하며 읽고 좋은 작품을 발표한다. 잘된 작품은 각 반당 1명씩 선정하여 시상한다. 한줄평 하기 순서로는 강민숙 시인의 ‘채석강을 읽다’를 읽고 별점을 매기고 10자 내외의 한 줄평을 해보고, 친구들과 비교하며 발표한다.

앞으로 정의로운 삶을 위하여 어떤 자세를 가지고 살아갈 것인지 자신의 다짐을 한 문장으로 적어 게시하도록 한다. 동학농민혁명 백산대회 기념 포토존을 학생들과 함께 제작하여 역사적 의미를 담은 각종 물품들을 활용하여 꾸민 다음 학교 현관 및 교문에 설치한다. 학생들이 사진을 찍으며 동학혁명 기념행사를 학생들 방식으로 즐기도록 한다.

외부 행사로는 동학농민혁명 백산대회 농민군 재현 동학농민혁명 백산대회를 기념하기 위하여 농민군 재현행사를 통해 백산면 일대를 행진한다. 학생들의 손으로 새롭게 디자인 된 흰 티셔츠를 입고 동학농민혁명 길을 걸으며 129년 전, 행동할 수밖에 없었던 농민군의 마음에 공감하고 그 뜻을 이어받고자 하는 자세를 갖도록 한다.
