브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 현대제철이 26일 1분기 실적발표에 앞서 2050년 넷제로(Net-Zero) 달성을 위해 2030년까지 직·간접 배출량을 12% 감축한다는 탄소중립 로드맵을 공개했다.
이날 영상을 통해 직접 로드맵을 발표한 현대제철 안동일 사장은 “글로벌 선진국들은 기후변화와 연계해 자국 산업보호 및 경쟁력 선점에 주력하고 있다”며 “탄소중립은 선택이 아닌 필수이며 신성장 동력 확보와 지속가능한 친환경 철강사로 나아가기 위해 현대제철의 모든 역량을 집중하겠다”고 전했다.
현대제철은 EU의 CBAM1), 미국의 GSSA2) 등 탄소배출 관련 규제가 추진되는 글로벌 환경 속에서 이를 극복하기 위한 방안으로 탄소중립을 추진키로 했다.
먼저, 현대제철은 고로 제품의 품질을 유지하면서 저탄소화된 자동차용 고급 강재 생산을 목표로 ‘전기로-고로 복합 프로세스’ 생산 체제를 구축할 예정이다.

신전기로에는 현대제철의 독자기술에 기반 한 저탄소제품 생산체계인 ‘하이큐브(Hy-Cube)’ 기술이 적용된다. 하이큐브는 신전기로에 철스크랩과 고로의 탄소중립 용선, 수소환원 직접환원철 등을 혼합 사용해 탄소배출을 최소화하는 동시에 최고급 판재를 생산하는 핵심기술이다.
이렇게 생산된 저탄소 제품들은 현대제철의 고유 브랜드인 ‘하이에코스틸(HyECOsteel)’로 명명돼 글로벌 주요 고객들에게 제공될 예정이다.
현대제철은 이미 전기로를 활용해 자동차 강판을 생산·공급했던 경험이 있으며, 지난해 10월에는 세계 최초로 1.0GPa급 전기로 저탄소 고급판재의 시험 생산에 성공한 바 있다.
