영덕군과 신돌석 장군 숭모위원회가 주최·주관한 이번 숭모제향은 장군의 후손들과 숭모위원회 회원 등 100여명이 참석한 가운데 열렸다.
초헌관으로 김광열 영덕군수, 아헌관에 이상엽 신돌석함 함장, 종헌관에 서재찬 영덕경찰서장의 제관 아래 엄숙하고 경건하게 거행됐다.
의식행사는 제향행사에 이어 숭모사, 기념사 순으로 진행됐으며, 이후 신돌석 장군과 영릉의병진의 호국정신을 기리는 추모 공연과 추모 시 낭송 등으로 이어졌다.
숭모위원회 권효준 위원장은 “신돌석 장군의 숭모제향은 장군의 숭고한 뜻과 역사적 의미를 널리 알리고 나라 사랑을 위해 목숨을 바치신 장군의 삶에 대한 오늘날의 가치를 복원하는 일”이라고 설명했다.
김광열 영덕군수는 숭모사를 통해 “나라를 위해 일생을 바치신 장군님의 숭고한 호국정신과 희생정신은 대한민국이 고난을 이겨내고 세계에 우뚝 설 수 있었던 밑바탕으로 우리가 계승하고 발전시켜야 할 가치”라며, “숭모제향을 통해 영덕군 호국문화의 가치를 재조명하고 그 의로운 뜻을 후손들에게 전달할 수 있는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 전했다.
한편, 신돌석 장군은 축산면 도곡리에서 평민의 아들로 태어나 동해안 일대를 누비며 항일운동에 맹위를 떨쳐 ‘태백산 호랑이’라고 불리기도 한 항일 의병장으로, 1963년 건국훈장 대통령장에 추서됐다.
영덕군과 숭모위원회는 항일 구국 활동을 위해 청춘을 바친 신돌석 장군을 기리고 숭고한 호국정신과 용맹한 기상을 선양하기 위해 매년 호국보훈의 달인 6월에 숭모제향 행사를 개최하고 있다.
또한 영덕군은 대한민국 해군의 1800t급 잠수함 신돌석함 부대와 지난 2017년 자매결연 협약을 맺어 신돌석 장군의 호국정신과 애국심을 함께 기리는 행사를 진행해오고 있다.
