EM이란 Effective Micro-organisms의 머리글자를 딴 약자로서 유용한 미생물을 뜻한다. 일반적으로 효모, 유산균, 누룩균, 광합성 세균, 방선균 등 80여 종의 미생물이 들어 있어 악취 제거, 수질 정화, 금속과 식품의 산화방지, 남은 음식물 발효 등에 탁월한 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다.
영덕군 지속협은 지역의 환경 개선을 위해 EM 제작과 보급사업을 적극적으로 추진해 왔으며, 이번에 작업장을 새로 개소함으로써 군민들을 대상으로 체험활동과 홍보 등의 다양한 사업을 펼쳐 EM 활성화에 더욱 박차를 가할 계획이다.
이날 행사에는 김광열 영덕군수, 손덕수 영덕군의회 의장과 의원, 황재철 경북도의원 등을 비롯한 기관단체장들과 영덕군 지속협회원과 경상북도 지속협회원 등 100여 명이 참석했다.

한편, 영덕군지속협의회는 1996년 그린영덕21 추진협의회로 시작해서 2020년에 정부의 환경 분야 추진 방침에 발맞춰 영덕군 지속가능발전협의회로 단체명을 변경하여 27년의 긴 역사를 가지고 환경보호 및 홍보에 앞장서고 있다.
