2014년 오픈한 제주도 서귀포시의 'THE WE호텔 제주(제주도 서귀포시 1200로 453-95-회수동)'는 5성급 고급호텔이다. 이 글은 필자가 쓴, 이 호텔 관련, 현지르포 제2탄이다.
기자란 무엇인가? 눈에 보인대로 기록하는 기록자이다. 이 글은 눈에 보이는대로 기록한, 기자의 글이다. 그 이상도, 그 이하도 아님을 전제로 한다.
필자는 지난 6월24일자 브레이크뉴스에 게재한 “제주도 'WE Hotel 제주’...대한민국에 이런 고급 숙박시설이...'국가의 자존심(自尊心)'"제목의 르포기사에서 "지난 6월22일-23일, 제주도에서 열린 한국언론진흥재단이 주최하는 2023년 뉴스저작권 위탁회원사 워크숍 및 정기총회에 참석키 위해 제주도를 방문했다. 제주도에 머무는 동안 'THE WE Hotel 제주'(제주도 서귀포시 1200로 453-95)에 머물렀다. 몇 년 전에도 투숙했던, 오성급 호텔"이라면서 " 'THE WE Hotel 제주'는 '도래숲' 안에 지어져 있어, 숲길 걷기가 환상적이다. 제주도는 한민족이 가진 천혜의, 자연이 준 특별한 섬이다. 제주도 어디를 걸으나, 걸으면, 그냥 행복해진다!"라고 썼었다.

이때는 이 호텔의 정문에서 오른쪽에 위치한 '도래숲'을 르포했었다. 이번의 글에서는 호텔의 왼쪽에 위치한 '해암숲'을 르포(report)한 글임을 밝힌다.
필자는 'THE WE Hotel 제주’ 숲 길을 르포하는 것의 의미 부여에서 "호텔을 소개하려는 의도보다는 대한민국에도 이런 호텔과 호텔에 딸린 대단한 자연 숲길이 있다는 것을 보여주려는 의도"라고 밝혔었다. 세계, 그 어디에 내놓고서라도 자랑할 만한 자연 풍광이 있음을 기록했다. 대한민국에 이런 숙박시설과 그 환경이 조성(6만여 평)돼 있다는 것은 우리나라의 자존심(自尊心)이라고 생각했었다.

'해암숲'을 모두 걸어본 소감은? 천년 자연숲과 함께한, 그 전체의 소감은 "아, 좋다"는, 자연스러운 탄성이다.

해암숲 길 구풀구풀, 모두는 빨간 색 특수 아스팔트가 깔려있다. 안전하게 걸을 수 있는 시설이다. 30분 정도 걸을 수 있는 숲길은 처음부터 끝까지 갖가지 나무-풀과 마주친다.
각종 나무와 풀은 밤이든 낮이든 호흡을 할 것이다. 그런 숲길을 걷노라면, 숲길만의 맑은 공기 속에 풍덩 빠지게 된다. 신선한 세상 속으로 들어간다. 이때, 몸 속의 불순물이 빠져나갈 것이다.

해암숲길 오른쪽에는 제주도의 까만 화산석으로 쌓은, 돌담길로 이어져 있다. 지구가 생성될 때의 화산석들이 숲길에 들어온 내방객들을 안내한다. 한참 걷다보면, 계곡물이 흐르는 곳에 위치하는 작은 옹달샘을 만난다. 작은 폭포가 있다. 세월이 유유히 흐르고 있음을 보여주는 폭포가 눈에 들어온다.

해암숲 길은 온통 녹색 천지다. 녹색? 자연을 의미한다. 시멘트가 축조한 도심의 빌딩숲과는 판이하게 다르다. 도시가 '생명없음'을 뜻한다면, 이 숲은 '생명있음'을 뜻한다. 숲속에 있으면, 그 자체가 '생명있음'에 포함되는 것이다.
해암숲이 끝나는 지점에서 잔디로 뒤덮힌 축구장과 만난다. 잡풀이 없는, 잔디천국이다. 도보로 한 바퀴를 돌아봤다.

이 호텔의 오너인 김성수 박사(한라 의료재단 원장)는 호텔이라는 기존의 개념에 헬스 리조트를 보탰다. 단순한 투숙이 아닌, 이 호텔에 투숙함으로서 건강해질 수 있다는 건강 개념을 보탰다고 한다. 해암숲을 걷노라면, 창설자의 의도가 자연스레 읽힌다.
필자는 이 호텔의 '르포 1탄'에서 "'THE WE호텔 제주'는 이 세상에서 독보적이다. 하나 뿐이다. 그래서 최고급"이라고 썼었다. 2탄의 글 말미에도 이 글을 차용해왔다. 달리 쓸 단어가 없어서이다.
