성비(性比)라는 게 있다. 여성의 수를 100이라 했을 때 남성의 수가 얼마인지? 이 게 성비(性比)이다.

그런데 한반도는 일제 강점기, 6.25 전쟁-경제성장기 등을 겪어 성비가 여성초월(女性超越) 현상에 빠졌다. 20세기 대한민국 경우, 일제 36년-6.25 전쟁-경제성장기를 거치면서 남자의 사망자가 여성보다 월등히 많아 여성초월 사회-여성 과잉사회가 됐다. 일제강점기 때 징용-징병, 전쟁 때 군 복무, 경제성장기 때 과도한 노동 등으로 남성 사망자 많아 여성의 숫자가 월등히 많은 사회가 지속됐었다.
이로 인해 성비(性比)가 극도로 파괴됐다. 한반도는 6.25 전쟁(1950-1953)을 치렀다. 전쟁은 전쟁에 참여한 남자 군인들은 목숨을 앗아갔다. 6.25전쟁과 관련한 한 통계는 전쟁 중 사망자 수를 127만 명(남북 민간인은 약 53만 명, 한국 군경은 14만 명, 북한군(조선인민군)은 52만 명)으로 집계하고 있다. 전쟁 때 남성 군인들이 다수 사망, 성비가 파괴됐던 것. 그 후 여성들은 성비 파괴로 독신(獨身)을 강요당했다. 그래서 다수의 여성들은 어찌할 수 없이 혼자 살아야 하는, 독신 인생일 수밖에 없었다.
