[브레이크뉴스=주윤한 기자] 지난 2001년에 도난됐던 함양 벽송사 여래회도가 20여년 만인 25일 본래의 자리인 벽송사로 돌아왔다.
함양 벽송사 여래회도는 1897년에 만들어진 후불도로 세로 172cm, 가로 200cm의 면포에 하단 연지에서 솟아오른 연화대좌에 결가부좌로 앉은 여래삼존과 제자 8위, 범·제석천, 사천왕 등을 가득차게 구성했다.
채색은 적색과 녹색 위주에 양청색을 가미해 단조로움을 피했다.
도상 구성이나 존상 묘사, 양청색의 사용 등에서 19세기 후반 여래회도의 전형을 보여주는 작품이다.
지난 2001년 10월 벽송사에서 도난당했던 여래회도는 그 동안 행방이 묘연하다 2020년 1월경, 경매사에 불화를 출품해 처분하려다 범행이 발각된 피의자의 자택을 수색하는 과정에서 오랫동안 은닉해 온 불상과 불화 등 총 32점의 도난 불교문화유산을 찾아내면서 그 존재가 드러났다.

당시 문화재청의 문화재감정위원들은 은닉 사범으로부터 압수한 32점 전부에 대해 진위감정을 실시해 대한불교조계종 소속의 전국 14개 사찰들에서 서로 다른 시기들에 도난당한 문화유산임을 확인하고 항온·항습 상태가 양호한 국립고궁박물관 수장고에 위탁·관리해 왔으며 서울중앙지방검찰청이 압수문화재의 원 소장처 환부를 결정함에 따라 원 소장처가 속해 있는 대한불교조계종에 환부하면서 본래 자리인 벽송사로 돌아오게 됐다.
벽송사 주지 만일스님은 “성보문화재의 무사 환수는 우리 불자 뿐만 아니라 성보문화재의 환지본처를 바라는 지역민과 전 국민의 서원이 만들어낸 결과”며 “앞으로 불교문화재가 도난당하는 일이 없기를 진정으로 바란다”고 전했다.
함양군 관계자는 “이번에 환수된 벽송사 여래회도의 가치를 조명해 문화재 지정 절차를 밟을 예정”이라고 밝혔다.
