필자(문일석)는 1차산업 시대인, 농경사회를 의미하는 시골에서 태어나 자란, 시골출신-촌(村)출신이다. 전남 담양군 수북면 풍수리에서 태어났다.
1973년 군대(軍隊)에 입대, 군에서 정훈병과로 배속돼 준(準) 기자생활이 시작됐다. 그후 줄곧 기자로만 일했다. 그러하니 올해 기자생활 50년째. 나의 정체성(正體性)을 스스로 토해내자면, 나는 대한민국 언론계의 변방(邊方)이었으며-비주류(非主流)였다. 줄곧 주간신문-인터넷 매체에서 기자-발행인으로 일해 왔으니, 변방(邊方)이자, 비주류인 셈이다.
미국은 언론 선진국이다. 세계 으뜸가는 자유언론의 국가이다. 필자는 1985년부터 1989년까지 미국 뉴욕의 맨해튼에서 반정부 기자로 일했었다. 이때 미국식 자유언론이 무언지, 직접 체험했었다. 필자의 언론 인생에 지대한 영향을 끼친 기간이었다.
필자가 발행인으로 있는 주간현대는 지난 1997년 창간했으므로 올해 26년째 발행되고 있다. 인터넷 신문인 브레이크뉴스는 올해로 20년째이다. 특히 브레이크뉴스는 인터넷 언론시대 개막의 초기 매체였으니, 선발(先發) 매체였던 것. 그러나 지금은 1만여 개의 매체 중 하나일 뿐. 1만분의1 매체이다. 인터넷 언론시대, 언론자유가 만발했다. 인터넷 언론, 꽃으로 치면 꽃이 활짝 피었다. 1인 미디어화 했다. 매체 수가 늘어나는 게 좋긴 하나, 매체의 영향력 면에서 영원한 비주류의 나락으로 떨어져가고 있다. 변방의 한 매체, 틈새 자리를 차지하고 있을 뿐이다.

이쯤해서 대한민국의 언론자유(自由)를 생각한다. 대한민국은 북한-중국, 러시아 등 언론통제 국가와 인접해 있는 국가이다. 이들 국가는 국가가 언론을 통제해온 국가들. 공산당 1당 독재 국가들이다.
그러나 대한민국은 언론자유가 만발해 있는, 언론자유의 국가이다. 언론자유가 신장된, 언론자유의 모델 국가이다. 언론자유가 보장돼 있다는 것은, 개인의 자유가 보장돼 있다는 이야기이다. 대한민국은 동아시아 국가들 중에서 언론자유가 가장 잘 보장된 국가. 이런 대한민국에 살고 있는 게, 이런 국가에서 언론기관의 오너로 일하고 있다는 게 자랑스럽다.
이영작(李英作) 박사(81)는 지난 2022년 6월호 월간조선과의 인터뷰에서 언론자유가 없는 중국의 미래를 언급했다. 자유가 없는 국가의 암담한 미래를 조망했다. 그는 이 인터뷰에서 “시진핑(習近平) 체제가 점점 강화되면 결국은 국가적 위기가 닥칠 것으로 봅니다. 분열 가능성도 높아요. 신장이나 티베트 등 소수(少數)민족이 들고일어나겠죠. 제 주장의 근거는 단순합니다. 중국엔 자유가 없잖아요. 자유가 없는 나라가 어떻게 자유무역 세계에서 번영할 수 있겠습니까? 자유가 없으면 아이디어도 없고, 창의적인 기업가도 나오지 않습니다”고 지적하면서 “단순 제조업을 뛰어넘는 경제개발의 가능성이 없어요. 단순 제조업을 바탕으로 경제 규모와 소득을 키웠는데, 계속 그 방식으로 경제를 돌리기엔 중국은 지금 한계점에 와 있습니다. 무엇보다 인건비가 가파르게 올랐고, 여러 면에서 단순 생산기지로서의 비교우위가 거의 다 사라졌어요. 그런데 한계를 극복할 수단이 없습니다. 그래서 망한다는 겁니다.”라고 피력했다. 모든 국민에게 자유가 주어지는 것이, 국가 발전에 얼마나 중요한 힘인가를 예시했다.
