브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 이동관 방송통신위원장은 8일 아니면 말고 식으로 보도하고 나중에 책임지지 않는 언론사에 대해 "사회적 공기(公機)가 아니라 흉기"라고 비판했다.
이동관 위원장은 이날 국회에거 열린 대정부질문에서, 지난해 대선 직전 뉴스타파가 보도한 '김만배 인터뷰' 허위 의혹과 이를 인용 보도한 언론과 관련한 질의를 받자 이같이 밝혔다.
그는 "거대한 선거조작 카르텔이 작동했다는 의심이 확산되고 있고, 수사가 이뤄지고 있으니 지켜봐야하겠다"면서도 "하지만 만약 언론조작으로 이익을 얻으려는 정치세력의 사주가 있었고, 이를 실행한 단계적 메커니즘이 입증된다면 모두 다 처벌을 받아야 할 것"이라고 강조했다.
이동관 위원장은 가짜뉴스에 대해 "가장 중요한 것은 문제가 생기면 반드시 책임지도록 하는 것"이라며 "솔직히 지금까지 방송사 재허가 제도 속에서 수많은 문제가 생겨도 3년 조건부 재허가 이런 식의 운영을 해왔다. 그런 것부터 근본적으로 재검토해 공영방송으로서 존립 가치가 없는, 국기를 흔드는 악의적 사고를 일으키는 경우는 존폐 자체를 재검토해보는 것이 근본적으로 필요하다"고 말했다.
그는 또한 "(가짜뉴스를 보도하고) 대선에서 이기면 그만이다는 식으로 아무도 책임지지 않는 상황이 있어서는 안 된다"면서 "반드시 이런 상황이 재발하지 않도록 보완 입법이 됐건, 현행 제도 속에서 단속하고 규제할 수 있는 방안을 마련해야 한다"고 강조했다.
아울러 '유사 언론'을 통해 확산되는 가짜뉴스도 문제가 되고 있다며 이를 막을 보완 입법이 필요하다고 강조했다.
이 위원장은 "포털은 가짜뉴스를 퍼 나르는 수단으로 작용하고 있음에도 이에 대한 책임은 지지 않고 있다"며 "선진국 어디에도 이런 일은 없다. 우선 이를 규율할 보완 입법이 필요하다"고 했다.
그러면서 "선진국에서 왜 이런 일이 드물겠나. 이런 일이 벌어진다면 개인이든 회사든 영원히 퇴출돼야 하고 수백억원, 수천억원의 추징을 당하기 때문에 매우 신중할 수밖에 없는 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
