필자는 “나는 정명석을 만나러 간다”의 저자로서 10월15일 네이버블로그 말씀맛집 갓잼뉴스(godjamnews)와 서면 인터뷰를 가졌습니다. 필자는 이 인터뷰에서 “정명석 목사가 1만명 여성을 성폭행(强姦) 했다고? 재판 과정에서 정명석 목사에게 강간당한 1만명의 명단이 공개된다면? 필자는, 그때서야 이 사건이 '진실'이라고 믿겠다. 절대로, 그런 일이 일어날 수는 없다. 왜냐? 이 사건은 유령적(幽靈的) 사건, 즉 사실이 아닌, 피해자 숫자가 어마어마하게 부풀려진, 왜곡된 사건이기 때문이다. 들판에서 풀을 뜯는 소도 웃을 일”라고 말하고 “요즘 사회적으로 주목을 받고 있는 기독교복음선교회(JMS)의 정명석 목사는 한국산 새 종교(K-종교)의 설립자입니다. 이 교단 역시 'K-종교'의 영역에 속합니다. 세계 속에 선교, 외국인 신자들의 수가 날로 늘어나고 있습니다. 세계본부가 있는 충남 금산군 월명동에는 47만평에 달하는 자연교회가 개발돼 있습니다. JMS는 자체 내의 모순을 제거하는 기간을 거쳐, 정화가 된다면, 'K-종교'의 위력을 발휘하는 한국산 종교가 되리라고 예견합니다.”라고 강조했습니다.
필자의 인터뷰가 게재된 갓잼뉴스(godjamnews)는 JMS가 대외에 선교회 대하여 알리는 블로그라고 합니다. 필자와의 인터뷰 진행은 "G.jams" 관계자가 진행했음을 밝힙니다. 아래는 인터뷰 전문입니다.

[단독] ‘나는 정명석을 만나러 간다’ 저자, 문일석 르포작가를 만나다
올해 3월 넷플릭스 오리지널 다큐멘터리 <나는 신이다>방송 후, 기독교복음선교회(세칭 JMS)와 정명석 목사에 대해 '1만명 성폭행' 등 온갖 자극적 헤드라인이 대한민국 온라인 매체들을 장식했다. 언론의 선동으로 세계가 불타오르는 가운데 이번 사건의 내막을 꿰뚫어 본 50년차 기자가 있다.
문일석 르포 작가(브레이크 뉴스 대표)는 JMS교인이 아닌 것은 물론, 정명석 목사와 개인적 친분이 있는 것도 아니였다. 그는 JMS편인 것이 아니다. 다만 그의 뇌리를 스친 ‘정명석은 덫에 빠진 게 아닐까?’에서 정명석 목사 사건 추적이 시작됐다. 지금부터 문일석 르포 작가를 만나보자.
-3월 초 JMS에 대해 언론 폭격이 쏟아지면서, 브레이크뉴스에도 초기엔 JMS에 대해 부정적 기사가 소수 올라갔었는데요, 이후 JMS 에 대해 현재처럼 긍정적 보도를 하는 방향으로 전환하게 되신 계기는 무엇인가요?
▲지난 3월초 소위 OTT 저널이라는 ‘넷플릭스’에 ‘나는 신이다’는 프로가 방영됐습니다. 내용상 반향이 컸습니다. 이 프로의 방영 이후, 정명석 목사님에 대해서 경천동지(驚天動地)할, 언론의 보도물들이 쏟아졌습니다. 정명석 목사님은 이미 지난 2022년 10월28일 준 성폭행 사건 구속(미결수)된 상태였습니다.
이 사건을 이야기하면, 3월14일 OO라디오에 반 JMS 활동가의 방송출연이 있었습니다. 이와 관련, A일보는 지난 3월14일자 보도기사에서 “K교수는 14일 OO라디오 ‘이슈 앤 피플’ 인터뷰에서 피해자 규모를 묻는 진행자의 말에 '평소 정명석이 했던 말이 ‘나는 1만명을 성적 구원을 통해 하늘의 애인으로 만드는 게 지상 목표’였다'라며 '즉 1만명을 성폭행하는 게 목표라고 본인 스스로 얘기를 해 왔고, 제가 그 사람의 행태를 관측해 온 결과로는 그 사람은 오로지 성폭행에 매진했던 사람이기 때문에 그 사람의 목표를 초과 달성하지 않았을까 생각한다'고 밝혔다”고 보도했습니다. 이 신문은 “K교수는 이어 '지금 나서서 고소하신 분은 백사장에 있는 모래 한 줌이 되지 않을까'라고 말했다.”고 덧붙였습니다.
이 보도 내용을 단순하게 '산수(算數)'로 계산하면 “성폭행 숫자가 1만명을 초월했다”로 읽혀집니다. 이 보도 이후 현직 검찰총장은 지난 3월6일 “피고인에게 범행에 상응하는 엄정한 형벌을 받게 하겠다”라고 발언했습니다. 검찰총장의 발언을 다시금 뜯어보면 “'피고인에게 범행에 상응하는 엄정한 형벌을 받게 하겠다'라고 말했으니, '범행이 없으면 처벌하지 않겠다'”로 재(再) 해석할 수도 있습니다.
이 보도대로, 남자 1인이 1만명을 성폭행(强姦)했다 하면, 이 보도 내용이 사실이라 한다면? 경악(驚愕)할 일이지요. 하지만, 이 보도는 과장-왜곡 일뿐, 전혀 사실이 아닐 것입니다. 이런 생각에서 보도의 진실이 무언지를 들여다보게 됐습니다.
-50년 기자생활을 해온 작가이신데, 기자정신이 발휘됐나요?
▲기자의 본업은 비판입니다. 그러나 이 비판에는 무한의 책임성이 뒤따릅니다. 그래서 보도하는 과정에서 사건을 크게 과장하거나 왜곡시키는 보도가 있어서는 안된다는 뜻입니다.
제가 이 사건을 깊이 들여다보기 시작한 시점은 지난 4월말 경입니다. 제가 오너(owner)로 있는 인터넷신문인 브레이크뉴스(www.breaknews.com) 4월27일자에, JMS 정명석 목사님 사건의 문제점에 관한 칼럼을 게재하게 됐습니다.
저는 “JMS 정명석 목사의 성폭행 사건 왜곡의 실상을 추적”이라는, 제목의 칼럼에서 “미국 언론의 경우, 성폭행 사건을 보도할 때 폭행자와 피폭행자의 신분을 공개하도록 돼 있다. 정확하게 사건의 행태를 보도한다. 미국식으로 말한다면, '정명석 목사가 1만 명을 성폭행했다' 하면, 수사 단계에서 1만 명의 성폭행 피해자 명단, 일시, 장소 등의 ‘피해자 리스트’가 작성되어 그 명단이 재판부에 넘어가야 한다. 그런데 정명석 목사가 성폭행했다는 사건에서 지금까지 피해자 이름이 확실하게 나오지 않는 것은 무엇을 의미하는가? 이 사건이 올바른 사건이라면, 정명석 목사에게 성폭행을 당했다는 1만명의 명단이 공개돼야 한다“고 지적했습니다.
그리고 ”JMS 정명석 목사 관련 보도는 사실과 진실에서 이만큼 차이가 있음이 발견된다, 'JMS 정명석 목사가 1만 명 이상을 성폭행했다'는 일부 언론의 보도 내용은 이미 전 세계로 타전됐다, 이 내용은 허구인데 사실처럼 알려져 있다. 대한민국은 세계에 내로라하는 민주주의 국가다. 한 개인이 1만 명을 성폭행할 정도로 어수룩한 나라가 결코 아니다.”라고 강조 한바 있습니다. 이어 “정명석 목사가 1만명 여성을 성폭행(强姦) 했다고? 재판 과정에서 정명석 목사에게 강간당한 1만명의 명단이 공개된다면? 필자는, 그때서야 이 사건이 '진실'이라고 믿겠다. 절대로, 그런 일이 일어날 수는 없다. 왜냐? 이 사건은 유령적(幽靈的) 사건, 즉 사실이 아닌, 피해자 숫자가 어마어마하게 부풀려진, 왜곡된 사건이기 때문이다. 들판에서 풀을 뜯는 소도 웃을 일”이라고, 피력했습니다.
-해외에서도 언론의 터무니없는 과장 보도에 따른 사례가 있었나요?
▲사회학 용어 가운데 '매카시즘(McCarthyism)'이란 용어가 있습니다. 이 용어는 "1950년대 미국의 상원의원 매카시가 국무부의 진보적 인사들을 공산주의자로 규정“한 발언을 한 데서 비롯됐습니다. 미국 공화당 상원의원 J. R. 매카시가 1950년 2월에 충격적인 발언을 했습니다. 그는 '미국 국무성 안에 205명의 공산주의자가 있다'고, 폭로성 발언을 했습니다. 이 발언의 여파는 심각했습니다. 그 여파는 정치권만이 아니라 할리우드 영화계와 방송계까지 미쳤습니다. 공산주의자라는 블랙리스트에 오른, 작가-감독-연예인들까지 일자리를 잃을 정도였습니다. 그러나, 그 결과는 미미했습니다. 당시 매카시 상원의원은 상원 외교관계위원회의 조사를 받았습니다. 하지만, 그가 말한 공산주의자가 누구인지는 구체적으로 밝혀내지는 못했습니다.
세계 각국 곳곳에서 사실을 담지 않은, 매카시즘적 발언-폭로성 보도들이 종종 나오지만, 종국에는 흐지부지 없어지곤 합니다.
올 들어 한국사회의 지독한 사회문제 중의 하나로 떠올랐던 기독교복음선교회(세칭 JMS) 정명석 목사의 준(準) 강간 사건이, 필자의 눈에는 매카시즘적 사건으로 비쳐집니다. 이 사건이 왜 매카시즘적인가요? JMS 정명석 목사 사건의 내막을 뜯어보면, 언론의 과장-왜곡보도에서 기인하기 때문입니다.
-문일석 작가께서 집필-출간한 “나는 정명석을 만나러 간다(대양미디어 출판)”는 저서의 서문-후기에서는 어떤 내용이 강조됐나요?
▲교보문고측은 이 책이 10월 4일자 주간베스트 셀러에 진입, 에세이 부문 13위에 올라왔다고 홈페이지에 공시했었습니다. 베스트셀러란 오르락내리락 합니다. 이 책은 정명석 목사를 한국 언론 과잉보도의 피해자로 지목, 이를 추적한 내용입니다. 그런데 이 책이 출판시장에서 뜨거운 판매반응을 보이고 있습니다. 그간 한국의 언론들이 JMS 정명석 목사가 1만명의 여성을 성폭행 했다는 류를 보도해 왔는데, 이는 명명백백 언론의 가짜보도에 속합니다. 이의 문제점을 적시한 필자의 글이 출판 상품으로 인기리 팔리고 있는 것입니다. 이는, 필자 개인에겐 기쁜 일이지만, 한국 언론의 허접함을 웅변하는 슬픈 사회 현상 중의 하나라고 생각합니다. 어느 날 갑자기, 정명석이 1만여 명이 여성을 성 폭행(준 강간)했다는 류의 기사가 세상에 풍미했습니다. 나는, 올해로 50년 째 기자생활을 해오고 있는 사람입니다. 문명시대에 그런, 쇼킹한 뉴스를 접한 순간 '과연 그럴까?'라는 의심이, 확 떠올랐습니다. 천둥번개처럼. 그때부터 나의 뇌리에선 '정명석은 덫(트랩=trap)에 빠진 게 아닐까?'라는, 기자로서의 상상이 떠나질 않았습니다. 베트남 전쟁 당시 구찌땅굴의 함정, 그 속의 덫(트랩=trap)이 연상 됐습니다. 그래서 이 글을 써야 한다고 결론을 내렸다, 라는 내용을 썼습니다.
저는 이 책의 프롤로그에서 "한 개인에 대한 언론의 과장-왜곡 보도가 얼마나 큰 파장을 일으키는 지의, 실증적, 또는 사실적인 기록으로 이해해주면 좋겠다."라고 주장했습니다. 그리고 에필로그에서 "정명석 목사는 반체제 인물이 결코 아니다. 그는 예수와 기독교 성경을 신봉하는 독실한 크리스찬이다. 예수의 정신인 '사랑'을 온 세상에 확산시키려 안달인 '사랑주의자'이다. 월남전에 참전, 평화의 존귀함을 몸으로 체험한 '평화주의자'이다. 건물로서의 교회가 아닌, 자연교회 운동을 해온 '자연주의자'이다. 또한 글로벌 자유체제를 옹호하려는 안정세력"이라고 피력했습니다.
-JMS 선교회는 지난 7월 이후 서울·부산·대구·대전 등 전국 주요 도시에서 정명석 목사님 사건의 공정한 재판을 호소하는 평화시위를 벌여왔습니다. 이에 대한 언론인은 시각이 어떠했는지요?
▲대한민국의 헌법은 집회-시위의 자유를 완벽하게 보장합니다. 누구나 시위에 가담할 수 있습니다. JMS 교단의 평화시위는 본 받을만 합니다. 어디까지나 평화시위이니까요.
JMS 교인협의회가 추진했던 평화시위 가운데 지난 8월20일 오후에 있었던 서울 시청대로에서의 시위라고 생각합니다. 주최 측 주장으로는 5만여 명이 모였다고 합니다. 이 평화시위에서는 JMS 정명석 목사에 대한 일부 언론의 왜곡 편파 보도를 규탄하고 공정 재판을 촉구했습니다. 그리고 이 집회에서 월남 참전 용사들이 옛 전우의 불공정한 재판을 중단하고, 공정한 재판을 호소했다는 사실입니다. 월남전 참전 용사들이 옛 전우인 정명석 목사의 공정한 재판을 호소하고 나섰습니다.
지난 8월13일 서울시청 앞 평화시위에 전용주 베트남전쟁 연구소장이 참석했습니다. 이 분은 이 날 연설에서 “정명석 목사(JMS)는 젊은 시절 베트남 전쟁에 두 번이나 참전했으며, 두 번째는 국가와 전우들을 위해 자원해서 참전한 애국애족 정신의 소유자”라고 피력하고 “적군을 생포해 무기고 정보를 입수하는 등 적군과 아군 모두를 살리면서도 베트남전쟁 최고의 공적을 세워 6번의 무공훈장과 전공표창장을 수여받은 국가유공자”라고 증언했습니다. 정명석 목사가 '애국자'라는 주장이었습니다.
-미국에서는 참전 군인들을 어떻게 예우하나요?
▲미국이 제 41대 조지 허버트 워커(H.W.) 부시 전 대통령은 2차 대전에 참전한 군인출신이었습니다. 미 항공모함 뇌격기 조종사였습니다. 그의 나이는 18세, 미 해군 최연소 전투기 조종사였습니다. 조지 허버트 워커(H.W.) 부시 전 대통령은 1944년 태평양에서 자신이 조종하던 비행기가 일본 방공포에 맞아 격추되자 낙하산으로 탈출, 가까스로 살아난 사람입니다, 그는 2차 대전 영웅이 됐습니다. 조지 허버트 워커(H.W.) 부시 전 대통령은 2차 대전에 참전한 대통령이었습니다. 조지 허버트 워커(H.W.) 부시 전 대통령처럼, 정명석 목사는 한국군의 월남전 참전 용사였습니다. 사지에서 돌아왔습니다. 베트남 참전 용사들은 애국 군인들이었습니다. 그들에게 씌우려는 불의의 올가미를 벗겨줘야 한다고 생각합니다. 미국처럼, 참전 용사들을 대통령은 못 시킬망정 감옥이 웬말일까요?
지난 8월20일 서울시청 앞에 5만명이 모였던 평화시위에선 서울특별시 종교특별위원회 대표, 국제기독교선교협의회 총재인 이기철 목사가 “정명석 목사는 월남전 참전용사로서 애국의 길을 살아왔으며, 금산 월명동에 자연성전을 조성하여 국내외적으로 국의를 선양한 종교지도자”라고 소개하고 “충남 금산군 월명동 성전은 다른 많은 기독교 목사들과 다수의 종교회장들과 함께 수차례 방문했을 때 모두가 극찬했던 곳으로, 고소인들이 주장하는 사건이 일어날 은밀한 장소가 없음에도 현장 검증 없이 재판이 진행된 것이 유감”이라고 표명했습니다. 이날 이기철 대표는 재판부에 “솔로몬의 지혜로운 재판, 예수님의 사랑의 재판”을 할 것을 당부했습니다.

-JMS 교인들이 정명석 목사의 공명정대한 재판을 위한 100만 명 탄원서 서명작업을 벌이고 있습니다. 이를 어떻게 보시나요?.
▲기독교복음선교회는 10월13일자 보도자료에서 “기독교복음선교회(JMS) 교인들이 그 동안 JMS에 대해 쏟아진 편파적 보도의 폐해를 알리고, 정명석 목사의 공명정대한 재판을 위한 100만 명 탄원서 서명 모으기에 나섰다"고 밝혔습니다. 지난 3월 넷플릭스 <나는 신이다>가 방영한 직후, 두 달 간 JMS 관련 언론 보도가 5,500여 건 나왔다, 하루 최고 487건(3월 10일 기준)까지 쏟아졌다는 것입니다. 기독교복음선교회 교인들이 장외 시위와 100만 탄원서 서명운동을 벌이는 이유는 명명백백(明明白白) 합니다. 주요 언론들이 왜곡-과장보도로 인한 피해를 없애달라는 요구인 것입니다.
-JMS에 대해 긍정적 보도를 해오고 계신데, ‘왜 JMS를 두둔하느냐’ 등 부정적 피드백이 많았을 것 같습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 계속 소신을 지켜나가시는 이유가 있을까요?
▲저는 정명석 선생을 직접 만났던 적은 1979년 부흥회 강연에 한번 참석한 것으로 그 이후 직접 만난 적이 없습니다. 기자는 사실을 기록하는 사람입니다. 사실 기록이 우선이라고 보았습니다. 정명석 사건의 경우, 피해 여성의 인적사항이 제대로 거명되지 않은 사건인데, 여성 1만명 이상을 성폭행 했다는 류의 과도한 뻥 튀기식 언론 보도는 근절되는 게 마땅합니다.
-기자로서 소신을 전하는 가운데 여러 이해세력들에게 협박을 받은 적은 있으실까요?
▲작가생활을 하는 중, 여러번 그런 상황에 처한 적이 있습니다. 하지만, 나는 어느 편에 치우쳐서 운동을 하는 전문 운동가가 아닙니다. 사실을 기록하는 기록자=기자일 뿐입니다. 사실을 왜곡하면, 사실이 아닙니다. 사실은 곧 진실이기에, 종국에는 사실이 승리합니다. 그리하니 나와 같은 작가는 협박의 대상이 될 수 없습니다.
-정명석 목사님은 왜 현재와 같은 어려운 상황에 처한 것 같나요?
▲기득권 종교세력들의 치열하고도 치밀한 견제를 받았을 수 있습니다. 사자신충. 사자는 몸속의 벌레 때문에 몰락합니다. 기독교복음선교회(JMS)-정명석 목사는 내부-이탈세력들이 놓은 덫(트랩=trap)에 걸렸을 수도 있습니다. 보이지 않는 세력이 놓은 ‘덫’이라는 실체가 엄연하게 존재합니다.
-작가께서는 지난 2010년 5월에 기독교복음선교회의 충남 금산군 진산면 월명동 '자연성전'을 취재했는데요.
▲르포작가인 저는 현장 취재를 즐겨합니다. 당시 그곳에 취재를 갔습니다. 브레이크뉴스 지난 2010년 5월17일자에 게재한 “정명석 총재의 자연 성전(47만 평 규모) '감동스런 성전'” 제목의 글에서 “다른 교회나 사찰에서 볼 수 없는 한 현상과 마주친다. 참석자들 대다수의 연령대는 20-30대라는 사실. 일반 기독교의 쇠퇴기에 기독교복음선교회의 부흥은 경이적이었고, 성도들의 연령대가 젊은층이라는 사실은 뭔가 타 교단-타 종교와 다르다는 것을 웅변해주고 있었다. 취재차 축제에 참석한 바, 일반인들이 이해할 수 없는 행동이나 카리스마에 도취한 이상한 행동이 연출되는 것을 발견할 수는 없었다. 오직 신앙을 통해 얻은 즐거움을 마음껏 표현하고 있을 뿐이었다.”라고 쓰고 “기자의 취재 결론은, 이 교회의 미래는 보장되어 있다라는 것이다. 솦 속에 핀 야생화 한 송이 보다 진실한 설교는 있을 수 없을 테니까. 성도들이 자연-야외교회에서 만나는 자연의 삼라만상 하나하나는 모두 신의 창조물이니까.”라고 기록했습니다.
이집트의 피라미드의 경우 기원전 2500여 년 전에 축조됐습니다. 당시 이집트 사람들의 신앙관(信仰觀), 즉 내세관으로 만들어진 것입니다. 축조 이후 4500년이 지난 오늘날, 이집트의 피라미드를 관광하려는 세계인들이 줄을 섭니다. 기독교복음선교회가 만든 월명동의 47만평에 달하는 자연성전(自然聖殿), 정말 대단합니다. 이 성전을 보이 위해 세계인들이 찾아올 것입니다. 지금도 그렇잖습니까? 자연성전은 이미 대한민국의 국익(國益)산업의 하나라고 생각합니다.
-K-종교(한국종교=Korean Religion), 즉 한국산 새 종교들의 국익에 대한 역할이 무어라고 보시나요?
▲요즘 사회적으로 주목을 받고 있는 기독교복음선교회(JMS)의 정명석 목사도 한국산 새 종교(K-종교)의 설립자입니다. 이 교단 역시 'K-종교'의 영역에 속합니다. 세계 속에 선교, 외국인 신자들의 수가 날로 늘어나고 있습니다. 세계본부가 있는 충남 금산군 월명동에는 47만평에 달하는 자연교회가 개발돼 있습니다. JMS는 자체 내의 모순을 제거하는 기간을 거쳐, 정화가 된다면, 'K-종교'의 위력을 발휘하는 한국산 종교가 되리라고 예견합니다.
기독교의 교조(敎祖)인 예수는 십자가 형(刑)으로 사망했습니다. 개신교의 핵심교지(敎旨)는 ‘사랑’입니다. 한국산 기독교계 새 종교들은, 그 어떤 교단이든지 ‘예수의 사랑 정신’을 내세웁니다. 새로 오는 예수, 즉 메시아의 재림을 대망(待望) 합니다. 한반도 내란-베트남 참전 등 전쟁을 경험한 한국산 교주들은, 인간의 처참한 죽음을 바라본 교주들은, 대부분이 평화(平和)를 소망합니다. 그리고 이를 해결할 메시아이즘을 지향합니다. 힘이 있는 지도자의 출현(出現)을 갈망합니다. 신흥교단인 JMS도 이에 해당합니다. 이런 ‘K-종교’가 국제 사회로 수출되는 게, 나쁠 게 있을까? 우리나라는 불교, 가톨릭, 개신교 등을 해외에서 받아들여 종교 백화점 국가가 됐습니다. 가톨릭에 바쳐진 막대한 주일헌금이 해외로 유출됩니다. 이게 사실입니다. 이제는 그 반대로 ‘K-종교’를 해외로 수출, 국가 부강에 기여할 때임을 지적합니다.
-마지막으로 브레이크 뉴스 창립을 전후한 기자생활의 이력에 대해 간단한 소개를 부탁드립니다.
▲저는 르포작가입니다. 30여권의 저서가 있습니다. “비록 중앙정보부(전 3권)”를 저의 대표작으로 꼽습니다.
1985-1989년 미국 뉴욕의 맨해튼에서 발행된 ‘세계 타임즈’의 기자(취재부장-편집 부국장), 시사 주간신문인 ‘토요신문’ 편집국장-‘일요서울’ 편집국장을 거쳤습니다. 1997년부터 시사주간신문인 ‘주간현대’, 1998년에 ‘사건의 내막’을 발행하기 시작, 오늘에까지 이르고 있습니다. 타블로이드 일간신문(전국지)이었던 ‘펜 그리고 자유’의 발행인도 역임했었습니다. 지난 2003년부터는 인터넷신문인 브레이크뉴스를 발행, 20년째 오너로 있습니다.

As the author of “I am going to meet Jeong Myeong-seok,” I had a written interview with Godjamnews, a Naver blog restaurant, on October 15th. In this interview, the author said, “Pastor Myung-seok Jeong sexually assaulted 10,000 women? What if the names of 10,000 people who were raped by Pastor Jung Myung-seok were revealed during the trial? Only then will I believe that this incident is the ‘truth’. No way, that can't happen. because? This is because this incident is a ghostly incident, that is, it is not true, but a distorted incident in which the number of victims was greatly inflated. “Even cows grazing in the fields are something to laugh about,” he said. “Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok of the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS), who is receiving social attention these days, is the founder of a new Korean religion (K-religion). This denomination also falls under the realm of ‘K-religion’. The number of missionaries and foreign believers around the world is increasing day by day. A natural church measuring 470,000 pyeong has been developed in Wolmyeong-dong, Geumsan-gun, South Chungcheong Province, where the world headquarters is located. “I predict that if JMS is purified through a period of eliminating contradictions within itself, it will become a Korean religion that demonstrates the power of ‘K-religion,’” he emphasized.

[Exclusive] Author of ‘I’m Going to Meet Jung Myung-seok’ meets reportage writer Moon Il-seok
After the Netflix original documentary <I Am God> aired in March of this year, all kinds of provocative headlines about the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS) and Pastor Jung Myung-seok, including '10,000 people sexually assaulted', adorned Korean online media. While the world is on fire due to media instigation, there is a reporter with 50 years of experience who has seen through the inside story of this incident.
Reporter Moon Il-seok (CEO of Break News) was not only not a JMS member, but also had no personal relationship with Pastor Jung Myeong-seok. He is not on the JMS side. However, the thought that crossed his mind, ‘Hasn’t Jung Myung-seok fallen into a trap?’ led to the tracking of Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok’s case. Now, let’s meet reportage writer Moon Il-seok.
-As the media bombarded JMS in early March, there were a few negative articles about JMS on Break News at first. What prompted you to switch to reporting positively on JMS afterwards?
▲In early March, a program called ‘I Am God’ was aired on ‘Netflix’, the so-called OTT journal. The content resonated greatly. After this program aired, shocking news reports poured in about Pastor Myung-Seok Jeong. Pastor Myeongseok Jeong was already arrested (unconvicted) in a semi-sexual assault case on October 28, 2022.
Talking about this incident, an anti-JMS activist made a broadcast appearance on OO Radio on March 14th. In relation to this, Ilbo A reported in a press article dated March 14th, "Professor K said in an interview with OO Radio's 'Issue and People' on the 14th that when the host asked about the number of victims, 'What Jung Myeong-seok usually said was, 'I will sexually save 10,000 people.' “My ultimate goal was to make her the lover of heaven,” he said. “In other words, he himself said that his goal was to sexually assault 10,000 people, and as a result of my observation of that person’s behavior, he was only devoted to sexual assault.” “Because he is the person who did it, I think he may have exceeded his goal,” the report said. The newspaper added, “Professor K went on to say, ‘Wouldn’t the person who came forward and sue now be like a handful of sand on a white sand beach?’”
If we simply calculate this report through ‘arithmetic’, it would be read as “the number of sexual assaults exceeded 10,000.” After this report, the current Prosecutor General said on March 6th, “We will ensure that the defendant receives a strict punishment commensurate to the crime.” If we look at the Prosecutor General's statement again, he said, "'The defendant will receive a strict punishment commensurate with the crime,' so it can be reinterpreted to mean, 'If there is no crime, there will be no punishment.'"
According to this report, if one man sexually assaulted 10,000 people, what if this report is true? This is something to be shocked about. However, this report is just an exaggeration and distortion and may not be true at all. With this in mind, I began to look into what the truth of reporting is.
-You are a writer who has been a journalist for 50 years. Have you demonstrated your journalistic spirit?
▲The main job of a reporter is criticism. However, this criticism comes with infinite responsibility. So, this means that during the reporting process, there should be no reports that greatly exaggerate or distort the incident.
It was around the end of last April that I started looking into this case in depth. In the April 27th issue of Break News (www.breaknews.com), an online newspaper of which I am the owner, I published a column about the problems with the case of Pastor Myeongseok Jeong of JMS.
In a column titled “Tracking the reality of the distortion of the sexual assault case by Pastor Myeongseok Jeong of JMS,” I wrote, “In the case of the American media, when reporting on a sexual assault case, the identities of the assaulter and the person being assaulted are required to be disclosed. Accurately report the events of the incident. To put it in American terms, if ‘Pastor Jung Myung-seok sexually assaulted 10,000 people,’ a ‘victim list’ of 10,000 victims of sexual assault, including the date, time, and location, must be created during the investigation stage and the list must be handed over to the court. But what does it mean that the name of the victim has not yet been clearly revealed in the case of pastor Jung Myeong-seok's sexual assault? “If this incident is correct, the list of 10,000 people who said they were sexually assaulted by Pastor Jung Myung-seok should be made public,” he pointed out.
And, “It has been discovered that there is this much difference between facts and truth in the reports related to Pastor Myung-seok Jeong of JMS. The content of some media reports that ‘Pastor Myung-seok Jeong of JMS sexually assaulted more than 10,000 people’ has already been transmitted around the world. This content is Although it is fiction, it is known as fact. The Republic of Korea is a democratic country that is considered one of the best in the world. He emphasized, “This is by no means a country so dishonest that one individual can sexually assault 10,000 people.” He continued, “Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok sexually assaulted 10,000 women? -Have there been any cases overseas of absurdly exaggerated reports from the media?
▲ Among sociological terms, there is a term called ‘McCarthyism.’ This term originates from a statement made by U.S. Senator McCarthy in the 1950s in which he characterized progressive members of the State Department as communists." Republican U.S. Senator J. R. McCarthy made a shocking statement in February 1950. He said, "The U.S. Department of State He made an explosive remark, saying, "There are 205 communists inside." The repercussions of this remark were serious. The repercussions not only extended to the political world, but also to the Hollywood film and broadcasting industries. McCarthy-like remarks and exposé reports that do not contain facts often appear all over the world, but they tend to disappear in the end.
The semi-rape case of Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok of the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS), which emerged as one of the most serious social problems in Korean society this year, is seen as a McCarthyist incident in the author's eyes. Why is this incident McCarthyistic? If we look at the inside story of the JMS Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok incident, it is because of the media's exaggerated and distorted reporting.
-What content was emphasized in the preface and afterword of the book “I am going to meet Jeong Myeong-seok (Daeyang Media Publishing)” written and published by author Moon Il-seok?
▲Kyobo Book Center announced on its website that this book entered the weekly bestseller list on October 4th and ranked 13th in the essay category. Bestsellers go up and down. This book identifies and traces Pastor Myeongseok Jeong as a victim of excessive reporting by the Korean media. However, this book is showing strong sales response in the publishing market. The Korean media has been reporting that JMS Pastor Myung-seok Jeong sexually assaulted 10,000 women, but this is a fake report by the media. The author's article, which points out this problem, is being sold popularly as a published product. Although this is a happy thing for me personally, I think it is one of the sad social phenomena that speaks volumes about the sloppiness of Korean media. One day, suddenly, an article saying that Jung Myung-seok had sexually assaulted (quasi-raped) more than 10,000 women was all over the world. I have been a journalist for 50 years now. The moment I heard such shocking news in the civilized era, the question ‘Is this really true?’ suddenly came to mind. Like a thunderstorm. From then on, the thought of being a reporter never left my mind: ‘Hasn’t Jung Myung-seok fallen into a trap?’ It reminded me of the trap in the Cu Chi tunnels during the Vietnam War. So he decided he had to write this, he wrote.
In the prologue of this book, I argued, “I hope this can be understood as an empirical or factual record of how much of an impact the media’s exaggerated and distorted reports about an individual have.” And in the epilogue, "Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok is by no means an anti-establishment figure. He is a devout Christian who believes in Jesus and the Christian Bible. He is a 'loveist' who is anxious to spread 'love', the spirit of Jesus, throughout the world. Participated in the Vietnam War and worked for peace. "He is a 'pacifist' who has personally experienced the dignity of the church. He is a 'naturalist' who has led the natural church movement, not a church as a building. He is also a stabilizing force who seeks to defend the global free system."
-JMS Mission has been holding peaceful protests in major cities across the country, including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, and Daejeon, since last July to appeal for a fair trial in the case of Pastor Myung-Seok Jeong. What was the journalist's view on this?
▲The Constitution of the Republic of Korea completely guarantees freedom of assembly and demonstration. Anyone can participate in protests. The JMS denomination’s peaceful protest is worthy of imitation. It is a peaceful protest after all.
I believe this was a protest on City Hall-daero in Seoul on the afternoon of August 20th, one of the peaceful demonstrations promoted by the JMS Church Member Council. Organizers claim that about 50,000 people gathered. This peaceful protest condemned some media's distorted and biased reporting on JMS Pastor Myung-seok Jeong and called for a fair trial. And the fact is that at this rally, Vietnam veterans stopped the unfair trial of their former comrades and appealed for a fair trial. Vietnam War veterans have come forward to appeal for a fair trial for their former comrade, Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok.
On August 13th, Director Jeon Yong-joo of the Vietnam War Research Institute attended the peace demonstration in front of Seoul City Hall. In his speech on this day, this person said, “Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok (JMS) participated in the Vietnam War twice when he was young, and the second time, he is a person with a patriotic spirit who volunteered to fight for the country and his comrades,” and “captured enemy soldiers.” He testified, “He is a man of national merit who was awarded six military service medals and a commendation for his outstanding achievements in the Vietnam War while saving both enemy and friendly forces, such as obtaining information on military arsenals.” The argument was that Pastor Jung Myung-seok was a ‘patriot.’
-How do we honor veterans in the United States?
▲Former President George Herbert Walker (H.W.) Bush, the 41st President of the United States, was a soldier who participated in World War II. He was a US aircraft carrier torpedo bomber pilot. At the age of 18, he was the youngest fighter pilot in the US Navy. Former President George Herbert Walker (H.W.) Bush barely survived by parachuting when the plane he was piloting was shot down by Japanese air defense artillery in the Pacific in 1944. He became a World War II hero. Former President George Herbert Walker (H.W.) Bush was a president who participated in World War II. Like former President George Herbert Walker (H.W.) Bush, Pastor Chung Myung-seok was a Vietnam War veteran of the Korean military. He came back from a limb. Vietnam veterans were patriotic soldiers. I think we need to remove the snare of injustice that is being placed on them. Like in the United States, if war veterans can't be president, what's the point of jailing them?
At the peaceful demonstration held in front of Seoul City Hall on August 20, Pastor Lee Ki-cheol, representative of the Special Committee on Religion in Seoul and president of the International Christian Mission Council, said, “Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok has lived the path of patriotism as a Vietnam War veteran, and he has lived a patriotic life in Wolmyeong-dong, Geumsan. He introduced himself as a “religious leader who promoted national righteousness at home and abroad by building temples,” and added, “The temple in Wolmyeong-dong, Geumsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do was a place that everyone praised highly when I visited it several times with many other Christian pastors and heads of religious organizations. He expressed, “It is regrettable that the trial proceeded without on-site verification, even though there was no secret location where the alleged incident occurred.” On this day, CEO Lee Ki-cheol asked the court to conduct “Solomon’s wise trial and Jesus’ loving trial.”
-JMS members are collecting 1 million signatures on a petition for a fair trial for Pastor Jung Myeong-seok. How do you view this?
▲In a press release dated October 13, the Christian Gospel Mission said, “Members of the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS) are raising awareness of the harmful effects of biased reports about JMS and gathering 1 million signatures on a petition for a fair trial for Pastor Myeongseok Jeong. Immediately after Netflix's <I Am God> aired last March, over 5,500 media reports related to JMS were published over a two-month period, reaching a daily peak of 487 (as of March 10). The reason why members of the Christian Gospel Mission are staging off-site demonstrations and collecting 1 million signatures on a petition is clear: they are demanding that the major media eliminate the damage caused by distorted and exaggerated reports.
-You have been reporting positively on JMS, but I think there has been a lot of negative feedback such as ‘Why are you supporting JMS?’ Nevertheless, is there a reason why you continue to keep your beliefs?
▲The only time I met Professor Myung-Seok Jeong in person was once when I attended a revival lecture in 1979, and I have not met him in person since then. A journalist is a person who records facts. In fact, I thought records came first. In the case of Jeong Myeong-seok, the personal information of the victim was not properly mentioned, and excessive and false media reports about the sexual assault of more than 10,000 women should be eradicated.
-Have you ever received threats from various interested parties while conveying your beliefs as a reporter?
▲I have been in such situations several times during my career as a writer. However, I am not a professional athlete who is biased towards one side or another. A recorder who records facts is just a reporter. If you distort the facts, they are not true. Facts are the truth, and in the end, facts win. Therefore, writers like me cannot be targets of threats.
-Why do you think Pastor Jung Myeong-seok is in such a difficult situation?
▲It may have been subject to fierce and detailed checks from vested religious forces. Lion God Chung. The lion's downfall is caused by bugs in its body. Christian Gospel Mission (JMS) - Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok may have been caught in a trap set by internal and breakaway forces. The reality of a ‘trap’ set by an invisible force clearly exists.
-The author covered the Christian Gospel Mission's 'Natural Temple' in Wolmyeong-dong, Jinsan-myeon, Geumsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do in May 2010.
▲As a reportage writer, I enjoy reporting on-site. I went there to do some reporting at the time. In an article titled “President Myeong-Seok Jeong’s natural temple (470,000 pyeong) ‘Inspiring temple’” published in the May 17, 2010 issue of Break News, “We encounter a phenomenon that cannot be seen in other churches or temples. The fact is that the majority of attendees are in their 20s and 30s. The revival of the Christian Gospel Mission during the decline of general Christianity was astonishing, and the fact that the believers were young eloquently demonstrated that it was different from other denominations and other religions. When I attended the festival for reporting purposes, I could not find any behavior that the general public could not understand or any strange behavior that was intoxicated with charisma. “I was only freely expressing the joy I gained through faith,” he wrote. “The conclusion of the reporter’s coverage is that the future of this church is guaranteed. There can be no truer sermon than a wild flower blooming in a shed. “Every single thing in nature that believers encounter in nature-outdoor church is God’s creation,” he wrote.

I believe that natural temples are already one of the industries of national interest in Korea.
-What do you think is the role of K-religion (Korean Religion), that is, new Korean religions, in national interests?

Jesus, the founder of Christianity, died by crucifixion. The core tenet of Protestantism is ‘love.’ New Korean Christian religions, regardless of their denomination, promote the ‘spirit of Jesus’ love.’ We look forward to the second coming of the new Jesus, the Messiah. Most Korean religious leaders who have experienced wars such as the Korean Peninsula Civil War and the Vietnam War, and those who have seen the gruesome death of human beings, hope for peace. And we aim for messianism to solve this problem. We yearn for the emergence of a powerful leader. This also applies to JMS, a new denomination. Is there anything bad about this ‘K-religion’ being exported to the international community? Korea accepted Buddhism, Catholicism, and Protestantism from overseas and became a religious department store country. A huge amount of Sunday offerings given to Catholics are leaked overseas. This is true. We point out that now is the time to do the opposite and export ‘K-religion’ overseas to contribute to the prosperity of the nation.
-Finally, please briefly introduce your career as a journalist before and after the founding of Break News.
▲I am a reportage writer. I have over 30 books. I consider “Even though the Central Intelligence Agency (3 volumes)” is my representative work.
From 1985 to 1989, he served as a reporter (reporting director and deputy editor) for ‘World Times’ published in Manhattan, New York, USA, and as editor-in-chief of ‘Saturday Newspaper’, a current affairs weekly newspaper, and editor-in-chief of ‘Sunday Seoul’.
