17일 공단에 따르면 이번 토론 세션은 17, 18일 양일간 개최되는 OECD-NEA 글로벌 포럼과 연계해, 국내 고준위방폐물 관리사업 추진방향에 대한 점검 및 논의를 위해 공단이 주관해 마련했다.
참고로 OECD-NEA는 경제협력개발기구(the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD) 산하 원자력기구(Nuclear Energy Agency, NEA)를 말한다.
각 세션은 원자력 후행핵주기의 중요성 및 국제기구의 역할을 주제로 한 전문가 강연, 연구용 지하연구시설의 필요성 및 유치지역 지원 방안에 관한 패널토론, 고준위방폐물 관리사업을 위한 미래세대 인력양성과 미래세대가 갖추어야 할 역량에 대해 논의하는 시간으로 구성됐다.
이날 토론 세션에는 한국원자력환경공단 김유광 본부장, OECD-NEA Rebecca Tadesse 방폐물관리 및 해체본부장, 미국 미시간대학 Todd Allen 교수, 스웨덴(SKB) Peter Wass 실장, 서울대 최성열 교수, 경희대 정재학 교수 등 국내.외에서 약 70명이 참석했다
Rebecca Tadesse NEA 방폐물관리 및 해체본부장은 “NEA는 원자력 에너지의 안전하고 지속가능한 이용을 위해 후행핵주기 사업이 중요해지는 시점에서, 이 자리를 통해 국내.외 전문가들과 한국의 고준위방폐물 관리 정책을 공유하고 상호 협력하게 되어 기쁘다”고 말했다.
김유광 한국원자력환경공단 고준위사업본부장은 “이번 토론 세션이 국내 고준위방폐물 관리사업의 마중물이 되어 현재 논의 중인 고준위 특별법 제정에도 긍정적인 영향을 미치기를 희망하며, 미래세대 전문인력 양성에 아낌없는 지원을 지속해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
