이번 행사에서 조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 기조강연을 통해 “세계 원전운영 상위 10개국과 비교하여 고준위방폐장 부지선정前인 나라는 우리나라가 유일하여, 고준위방폐물 특별법이 하루빨리 제정되어야한다”며 신속한 입법 필요성을 강조했다.
또한 “중저준위방폐물 사업의 경우, 안정적인 방폐물 인수를 위하여 1단계 동굴처분시설 총 방사능량을 상향하여 처분을 확대하고, 1단계 동굴처분시설(`15년부터 운영중)에 이어 2단계 표층처분시설(`25년부터 운영)및 3단계 매립형처분시설(`32년부터 운영 예정)을 적기 확보하고 방폐물검사 건물을 증설하는 등 필요 인프라를 확충하는 데 집중하고 있다”고 말했다.
이를 위해 한국방사성폐기물학회와 지속해서 협력함은 물론, 규제기관 및 연구기관, 방사성폐기물 발생자(한국수력원자력 등)와 유기적으로 현안을 논의하며 중저준위방폐물을 효율적이고 안전하게 관리하고 고준위 사업을 성공적으로 추진해나가겠다는 포부를 밝혔다.
