브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 조 바이든 미국 대통령과 시진핑 중국 국가주석이 15일(현지시간) 정상회담을 갖고, 미국의 요청에 따라 그간 중단됐던 고위급 군사 대화를 재개하기로 했다.
중국은 민감하게 여기는 '대만 문제'를 강조하며 향후 몇 년 이내에 대만을 상대로 군사행동을 할 계획이 없다는 점을 언급하기도 했다.
이날 CNN 보도에 따르면 양국 정상은 미국 캘리포니아 샌프란시스코 파이롤리 정원에서 오전 11시25분께부터 4시간에 걸쳐 회담을 가졌다.
정상회담 종료 직후 미국 고위 당국자들은 언론을 통해 이같은 합의 내용을 전했다.
바이든 행정부 입장에선 중국과의 군사 대화를 재개시킨 것은 이번 정상회담의 최대 성과다. 앞서 낸시 펠로시 전 미국 하원의장이 지난해 8월 대만을 방문하자 중국은 크게 반발하며 미국과의 고위급 군사 대화를 일방 중단했다. 이후 양국은 우발적 무력 충돌에 대한 불씨가 계속 남았다.
중국 관영 신화통신에 따르면 시진핑 주석은 "중국은 미국을 추월하거나 대체할 생각이 없으며, 미국도 중국을 압박할 계획이 없어야 한다"면서 "중국은 반드시 지켜야 할 이익, 원칙, 마지노선이 있으며 양국이 동반자가 돼 서로를 존중하고 평화롭게 공존하기를 희망한다"고 말했다.
시 주석은 특히 "대만 문제는 미중관계에서 가장 중요하고 민감한 문제"라며 "중국은 미국이 발리정상회담에서 대만 문제와 관련해 적극적인 입장을 밝힌 것을 매우 중시한다"고 말하기도 했다.
바이든 대통령은 최근 미국 내 문제로 부상하고 있는 좀비 마약 '펜타닐'에 대해서도 언급했다. 중국은 펜타닐의 전구체 화학물질의 주요 생산국이다. 미 고위 당국자는 이번 정상회담에서 중국이 향후 펜타닐 전구체 화학물질을 생산하는 기업을 추적하는데 동의했다고 전하며 향후 중국의 합의를 준수할지도 면밀히 지켜볼 계획이라고 설명했다.
양국 정상은 이 밖에도 인공지능(AI) 분야, 러시아-우크라 전쟁, 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁 등을 비롯해 경제 분야, 핵무기 보유량 등과 관련해서도 대화한 것으로 전해졌다.
