남성탈모는 대부분 M자형으로 시작한다. 물론 정수리에서 O자로 시작되는 경우도 있지만 많지 않다.
M자 탈모란 정면에서 봤을 때 머리카락과 이마가 맞닿은 경계선이 M자 모양으로 탈모가 진행된 상태다. 시간이 지나면서 앞머리로 확산되어 머리카락 경계선이 뒤로 밀려나면서 탈모가 진행된다.

성장인자는 모발 관련 세포의 분열을 촉진시켜 모발 성장을 빠르게 만들고 손상되거나 노화된 모발관련 세포들을 건강한 세포들로 교체하여 모발을 빨리 자라게 한다.
